    • A pre-pit detector comprises an optical detector which receives a reflected beam of an optical beam irradiated to the write surface by first and second light reception surfaces, which are split light reception surfaces, to output first and second optical detection signals corresponding to reception light intensities of the respective first and second light reception surfaces and receives the reflected beam from a pre-pit track pairing up with an information write track to which the optical beam is irradiated, on the first light reception surface. The first optical detection signal is given with an amplification result by a greater gain than the second optical detection signal to supply the first and second optical detection signals to a subtractor which computes the difference between the first and second optical detection signals. The output signal of the subtractor is digitized to generate a pre-pit detection signal.

    • The present invention provides a ceramic sintered body excellent in oxidation resistance under high temperatures and markedly superior to the conventional ceramic sintered body in the mechanical strength over a wide temperature range of between room temperature and 1,500.degree. C. The ceramic sintered body of the present invention comprises at least one ceramic crystal grain selected from the group consisting essentially of a monosilicate represented by the general formula RE.sub.2 SiO.sub.5, where RE denotes a IIIa group element including yttrium, and a disilicate represented by the general formula RE.sub.2 Si.sub.2 O.sub.7, where RE denotes a IIIa group element including yttrium, and at least one additional element selected from the group consisting of Al, Cr, Hf, Nb, Zr, Ti, V, Ta, Ca and Mg which is segregated in the boundaries of the ceramic crystal grains in an amount of 0.1 to 15% by weight of the sintered body in terms of the oxide thereof.

    • An information recording/reproducing apparatus capable of correctly reproducing information from a large number of recording tracks without requiring tracking servo. A recording medium is formed with at least one pilot track on which a pilot signal is recorded and a plurality of information data tracks which have the same track width as the pilot track and on which information data is recorded, where the pilot track and the information data tracks are arranged adjacent to each other. The information recording/reproducing apparatus comprises a plurality of reading units arranged in a width direction of the tracks, and each having a tracing width equal to or smaller than one half of a width of the track, a pilot signal detector for detecting the pilot signal from each of read signals read by each of the reading units, a track determining unit for determining a corresponding relationship between each of the reading units and each of the information data tracks in accordance with a detection result provided by the pilot signal detector, and a unit for sequentially selecting a read signal in accordance with a determination result provided by the track determining unit from the read signals to output the selected read signal as a read signal corresponding to each of the information data tracks.
