    • A mobile communications device has a multifrequency band antenna with a low band portion (LB) tuned to a low frequency band, and a first high band portion (HB1) tuned to a first high frequency band at higher frequencies than the low frequency band. The low band portion (LB) and the first high band portion (HB1) have a common first grounding point (GP1), a common feeding point (FP) for feeding input signals to the antenna and for receiving signals from the antenna, and a first conductor portion (CP1), which forms part of the low band portion (LB) and of the first high band portion (HB1). The first conductor portion (CP1) is electrically connected to the first grounding point (GP1) and to the common feeding point (FP). A second high band portion (HB2) is coupled to the first conductor portion (CP1) and tuned to a second high frequency band at a higher frequency than the low frequency band and different from the first high frequency band. A switching network is connected between the second high band portion and ground, allowing the resonant frequency of the second high band portion to be varied, on the basis of a signal which depends on the operating mode of the device, thereby allowing four band operation.

    • The present invention provides a miniature, built-in multi-band antenna which is suitable for use in future compact mobile terminals. According to exemplary embodiments, a built-in patch antenna is provided which includes patch elements of different sizes and capable of being tuned to different frequency bands. On each patch element is formed a slot which divides the patch element into sub-parts. Each sub-part of a patch element is structured so as to be resonant at a frequency in the same frequency band to which the patch element is tuned. As a result, a high efficiency, broad band, multi-band, and surface mountable low profile antenna can be realized.

    • A dual-mode Mobile Station (MS) supports both a satellite mode and a cellular mode using a combined swivel-type cellular and satellite antenna. The combined antenna has on one end a quarter wave stub for the cellular mode, and at the other end a compressible quadrifilar helical antenna for the satellite mode. The satellite antenna is preferably made of a plastic film in the form of a cylinder, on which a metallized film is deposited. The plastic film is filled with a foam rubber that keeps its cylindrical form. In the cellular mode, the flexible satellite antenna is compressed between the main housing of the MS and a sliding lid on the side of the MS to occupy a volume that is only a fraction of its uncompressed volume. In the satellite mode, the lid is opened and the combined antenna is rotated 90 to 180 degrees, at which point the satellite antenna resumes its cylindrical form due to the foam rubber expanding or mechanical driving inside of the plastic film.

The antenna arrangement further comprises a second branch connected to the ground element via a feeding point, a third branch comprising a third inductor loading (L3) and a first grounding pin connected to the first branch.     • An antenna for MIMO communications includes a ground plane having a planar surface, a first feeding patch spaced apart from and parallel to the ground plane, and a first parasitic patch spaced apart from and parallel to the first feeding patch.
