    • The technique introduced here includes a uniform customization system, which can support the customization of multiple software applications simultaneously. Customization data of a software application can be developed separately from the development of the application. The customization data is then stored, via the uniform customization system, into a customization storage. When the software application is executed, the software application retrieves, from the storage, the values of the customization data via the uniform customization system. The uniform customization system outputs the retrieved customization data indicating the current working context of a user, which may be used by the user to locate customization options in a customization user interface of the software application, for customizing functions performed in the current working context.

    • Aspects of the present invention relate to systems and methods for intra prediction. According to one aspect of the present invention, a macroblock may be partitioned into two, or more, sets of blocks. The pixel values for a block within a first set of blocks may be predicted using reconstructed values from only neighboring macroblocks. The pixel values for a block within another set of blocks may be subsequently predicted using reconstructed values from blocks in previously reconstructed sets of blocks and/or reconstructed values from neighboring macroblocks. The block residuals for the first set of blocks may be signaled, and the block residuals for subsequently predicted blocks may be signaled. The pixel values for blocks within a set of blocks may be predicted in parallel.

    • A system and method are provided for adaptive rate control in the transcoding of video streams. The method comprises: accepting frames of an input MPEG encoded video stream; decoding the video stream; determining video stream complexity; for each frame, calculating an output video stream quantization parameter (Qo) responsive to determined video stream complexity; and, encoding the output video stream into a protocol using Qo. Some aspects further comprise accepting a target bit rate ratio (r) for transcoding that is equal to the ratio of the target output video stream number of bits per frame (No), to the input video stream number of bits per frame (Ni). Then, Qo is also calculated in response to the value of r. More explicitly, Qo is calculated in response to a complexity ratio of: an accumulated complexity in the output video stream, to an accumulated complexity in the input video stream.
