    • A rotational direction detecting switch detects a rotational direction of a shaft, preferably of a seat belt retractor. The detecting switch is formed of a switch plate having a support portion for pivotally supporting the switch plate and restricting members spaced apart from each other for restricting a rotating angle of the switch plate, a spring member attached to the switch plate between the restricting members for elastically contacting an outer circumference of the shaft, and a switch situated near the switch plate for detecting a rotating position of the switch plate. Since the spring member is used to contact the shaft, the elastic deformation is large. Therefore, tolerance in manufacturing the switch plate can be large, so that its assembling accuracy may not be so accurate. However, the rotating direction can be positively detected.

    • A seat belt retractor is formed of a reel for winding a seat belt, and a spring member connected to the reel for providing a retracting force thereto. The retracting force is weak not to provide a feeling of oppression to a passenger when the passenger has fastened the seat belt. A motor is connected to the reel for driving the reel only in a direction of retracting the seat belt to generate a retracting force greater than that of the spring member. Thus, the seat belt retractor retracts the seat belt by sufficiently great retracting force, but does not provide a feeling of oppression to the person when properly fastened.

    • A seat belt system is formed of a seat belt, a seat belt retractor, a tension controller for controlling tension on the seat belt by controlling the seat belt retractor, and a CPU for controlling the tension controller to obtain a desired tension. Connected to the CPU are a collision predictive device, a rolling-over detecting device, a driver's state detecting device, a demonstration device, a notifying device for notifying a passenger by the tension on the seat belt, and a control condition setting device.     • A drive circuit for an ultrasonic motor includes a DC power source, a transformer for applying to the ultrasonic motor two phase high frequency voltage alternating currents having a predetermined phase difference for driving the ultrasonic motor, a switching device interposed between the DC power source and the transformer for allowing a direct current from the direct DC power source to flow to the transformer at a predetermined timing, and a CPU connected to the switching device for controlling the switching device at the predetermined timing. Thus, the alternating current having an optimum frequency can be reliably and easily obtained. The drive circuit may include a vibration attenuating device operated when the ultrasonic motor is stopped. As a result, vibration of a stator of the ultrasonic motor is gradually reduced.
