    • A dual channel power generation system comprises: a prime mover; a permanent magnet (PM) dynamoelectric machine that has a PM rotor coupled to the prime mover, two multiphase alternating current (AC) stators that develop electromotive force (EMF) in response to rotation of the PM rotor due to the magnetic flux linkage between the PM rotor and the stators, two control coils that each change the magnetic flux linkage of a respective stator in response to the level of a control current that passes through the control coil; a multiphase AC rectifier for each stator that receives AC power from its respective stator to supply DC power on a respective rectifier bus; a current feedback loop for each rectifier bus; a voltage feedback loop for each rectifier bus; a load-sharing controller responsive to both current feedback loops to develop a voltage regulator reference signal for each rectifier bus that is representative of the value of voltage that its corresponding stator should produce to maintain equal values of current for both rectifier buses; and a voltage regulator for each rectifier bus responsive to its respective voltage feedback loop and voltage regulator reference signal to produce the control current for its respective control coil that changes the magnetic flux linkage of its respective stator to maintain the value of voltage that its corresponding stator should produce to maintain equal values of current for both rectifier buses.

    • An electric motor control strategy includes using a low resolution position sensor that provides a square wave output signal. The position sensor information is converted into sinusoidal commutation signals for motor control that reduces torque ripple. In one disclosed example, square wave commutation is used at low motor speeds and a controller switches to sinusoidal commutation once a selected threshold speed of the motor is reached. In another disclosed example, sinusoidal commutation is used at all motor speeds with two different techniques for converting the square wave sensor signal into a sinusoidal commutation signal, depending on the motor speed.

    • The problem of maintaining precision control of a synchronous motor is solved in a motor start control which utilizes an estimate of the amplitude of the fundamental wave component as a feedback value. The motor receives power from a main inverter and an excitation inverter. The inverters are controlled by a control unit which includes a pulse width modulation generator which is responsive to a voltage command and a commutation command to develop switching signals for controlling the switches in the main inverter. At speeds above a preselected minimum speed, the voltage command is developed in a closed loop manner responsive to a feedback signal representing an estimate of the fundamental output of the main inverter.

    • The present invention provides for detecting rotor speed through the use of sense coils on the stator teeth. Voltage ripples caused by the rotor slots is detected by combining the signals of several such sense coils so that the fundamental voltage signal is cancelled or rejected and only the ripple voltages remain, a signal proportional to rotor speed. Several alternative methods for implementing that technique are discussed herein. At low induction motor speeds, the present invention filters out the voltage ripples and incident third harmonics and instead estimates rotor speed from the fundamental voltage. When the induction motor is already being driven by a prime mover, the present invention selects a proper initial frequency command for initial motor start by identifying rotor speed from the PWM inverter. Further, the present invention provides for using a generator to control voltage to the induction motor, with a PWM inverter to control frequency signals to the induction motor.
