    • An automatic exposure system for an imaging-based bar code reader. The automatic identification system includes: an aiming apparatus generating a beam to aid in aiming the system at a target object when the system is actuated; an imaging system including a pixel array, a focusing lens to focus an image of the target object onto the pixel array; and an automatic exposure system to determine an integration time for capturing an image of the target object. The automatic exposure system determines an integration time by: projecting an aiming pattern on the target object and capturing an image of the aiming pattern; determining a target distance from the imaging system to the target object based on a location of the aiming pattern within the captured image; determining a gain-integration time product utilizing an equation wherein the gain-integration time product is a function of a predetermined target image brightness and the target distance; and determining the integration time by selecting a gain value and solving for integration time given the gain-integration time product.

    • An optical code reading system includes an imaging engine having an illuminating assembly for illuminating a potential target area; an imaging assembly including an imaging sensor for acquiring a native image of a potential target area; and circuitry for converting the native image of a potential target area to a data signal and outputting the data signal. The data signal includes potential target area data indicative of low and high resolution representations of the native image; and at least one processor that includes means for receiving the data signal and separating the potential target area data included within the data signal into at least first and second groups of pixels indicative of the low and high resolution representations. The processor may also receive intermediate resolution representations. A corresponding imaging engine and processors capable of implementing the method of separating the high, low and intermediate resolution representations are also disclosed.

    • A method and imaging assembly (10) are disclosed adapted for reading a target object comprising a scan engine (48) having a sensor (46), focusing optics (44), and an imager (48). The scan engine includes a field-of-view defining an area to be imaged by the imaging assembly (10). A housing (80) internally lodges the scan engine (48) and an illumination source (36). The illumination source (36) is adapted to project illumination from the housing (80). A boot (30) extends from the housing (80) for shaping the illumination as it passes through the boot to form an illumination pattern from the illumination. The illumination pattern substantially conforms to a geometrical shape of the boot (30) and is adapted to envelope the scan engine field-of-view.

    • A scanner has a window in its housing through which the scanning beam emerges to impinge upon an indicia to be read. The beam scans in a raster fashion over the window, and as it does so it impinges upon beam position indicating means which locate the position of the beam with respect to the scanner in at least certain portions of the scan pattern. Specifically, the beam position indicating means determines the position of the beam in a direction perpendicular to the overall scanning direction. In a preferred embodiment, the beam position indicating means may comprise one or more CCD's which provide electrical output signals dependent upon the position of the beam when it impinges upon them. Alternatively, the beam position indicating means may comprise passive code means such as a stacked series of bar code symbols. The location of the beam when it scans across the symbol can be determined by the unique pattern of reflections.
