    • A method is disclosed for determining a connectivity status of radios in a coverage group. Each coverage group includes radios configured to transmit and receive range messages on a channel and a timeslot. Each radio in the coverage group is configured to generate a range message and to transmit the range message to each other radio in the coverage group. Each radio in the coverage group is also configured to receive, from each other radio in the coverage group, a range message generated by each other radio. Based on the range message received from each other radio, each radio is configured to determine bi-directional connectivity between the receiving radio and the radios that sent the D-ARTS messages. The determined bi-directional connectivity status is between each radio and each of at least two other radios in the coverage group.

    • A system and method for receiving data and control messages comprised of a series of data units is provided. The data units comprising each message are structured to follow a particular sequence, such as zero or more data units of a first type followed by one or more data units of a second type, which may then followed by data units of one or more other predetermined types. Upon receiving a data unit of a first or second type, a number of “units to follow” is determined from information provided in the received data unit. A number of subsequently received data units are then forced to be processed as one of the first type, the second type, or other predetermined type in accordance with the known structure of the message. The number of subsequently received data units that are forced to be processed as one of these types is based on the determined number of units to follow.

    • A method and apparatus for automatically switching functions associated with a leading radio to another radio on a channel is disclosed. The method includes receiving, from a leading radio by at least one other radio operating on a channel, an associated timing signal via at least one control timing message. Other radios use the timing signal to synchronize transmissions made on the channel. The method also includes receiving, by the other radios, an indication that the leading radio can no longer provide control timing messages. The method further includes maintaining, by each radio on the channel, values for various elements associated with radios operating on the channel and selecting a new leading radio from the other radios based on priorities of the various elements.

Preferably, the software components are organized into a core partition (210), a device specific partition (240), a feature enabler partition (220), and a signaling partition (230). The core partition (210) has software components that perform input handling, application interaction management, application control management, and output handling. The device specific partition (240) has software components for interfacing with user interface hardware in a manner specific to a particular type of communication device. The feature enabler partition (220) has software components that implement procedures for interacting with the user to perform a particular task. The signaling partition (230) manages procedures relating to a signaling protocol that requires user interaction. An interface protocol (350) governs inter-partition communications among software components of the various partitions.
