    • In a distributed computing network having computers interconnected with each other, a method and apparatus of providing policy based provisioning of middleware components to provide a solution for a service. With this invention, the middleware components that are necessary to provide the solution are determined. Then, the configurations of the computers are determined so as to satisfy a selected configuration policy for a selected solution. Finally, the necessary middleware components are installed on the configured computers so that the solution can be provided. Some of the selected configuration policies are: maximization of server utilization policy, provisioning of software components requiring external access based on availability of external resources, and minimization of total time to install said determined components. The progress of installation of the middleware components can also be monitored to make any necessary adjustments in the configuration of the virtual machines so that the selected configuration policy can be satisfied.

    • A computer implemented method, data processing system, computer usable program code, and active repository are provided for management of a software service. A request is received to deploy the software service in a computer network. A dependency analysis is performed for the requested software service to determine component software services and physical resources necessary to deploy and manage new software service as a composite in responsive to the software service being the new software service. An active object is created to manage the new software service using an active template based on the analysis. The new software service is deployed in the computer network using the active object. The new software service is managed using the active object.

    • An improved method and apparatus for dynamic execution of mobile agents. For example, a symbolic name for a component to be executed can be dynamically resolved using a component directory to determine an appropriate network host that the agent needs to visit. Preferably, the component directory can be queried by client or host machines, and updated by component hosts. Changes in a component's location and/or availability can also be captured at runtime and the agents dynamically routed to alternate component hosts. Still other features enable agents to flexibly accommodate the dynamics of the system. For example, if the attributes of a component are modified, or a component host becomes heavily loaded, agents can adapt to such changes by looking up an alternate host for the same component. Yet other features provide improved system manageability. For example, component hosts can freely update a component's location and/or attributes at any time. Changes to code for agents that use components residing at an updated component location are not required.
