    • Apparatus for separating sets of sheets such as copy sheets from an electrophotographic copier by delivering alternate sets of sheets to a stationary tray along overlapping laterally spaced paths. Sheets are fed first through a first, transversely fixed assembly of opposing feed rollers and then through a second, transversely movable assembly of feed rollers into a stacking tray. Sheets belonging to alternate sets are offset by shifting the second set of rollers laterally following the emergence of their trailing edges from the first set of rollers. In the preferred embodiment, the emergence of the trailing sheet edge from the first set of rollers is sensed by driving the second set of rollers at a slightly greater linear speed and sensing the retarding torque transmitted through the sheet from the first set of rollers.

    • A cleaning system for a liquid developer electrophotographic copier includes a roller formed with a body of resilient material, such as a closed-cell elastomer, having externally exposed, internally isolated surface cells. The roller is mounted to extend across the imaging surface in contact therewith and is driven to move the roller surface relative to the wet imaging surface to scrub the imaging surface and concomitantly under the action of the roller surface open cells to draw from the imaging surface liquid carrying toner effectively to dry the imaging surface. A small-radius edge is disposed in trailing engagement with the roller surface to deform the roller material sufficiently from the surface cells to be carried away for reuse or disposal.

    • My invention comprises a novel method of increasing the effective sensitivity of photoconductors to discharge by ionizing radiations by masking a latent electrostatic image formed by exposure of a subject to ionizing radiations, masking the latent electrostatic image, and then subjecting the masked electrostatic image to light exposure to increase the contrast of the latent electrostatic image. The thus enhanced latent electrostatic image is then developed by either positive or negative development, and the developed image may, if desired, be transferred to a carrier sheet. The invention reduces the Roentgen level to which a patient is exposed. One form of apparatus for carrying out this method is shown, comprising a first toning means for masking the latent electrostatic image and means for subjecting the masked electrostatic image to enhancement by flooding the same with light exposure. A second toning means for developing the enhanced electrostatic image is provided.

    • A pickoff device for a copying machine of the image transfer type in which the leading edge of the copy sheet to which the image has been transferred is guided from the surface on which the image was formed and developed into the narrow space between a first continually driven clutch element and a second clutch element resiliently restrained against frictional rotation with the first clutch element in the absence of a copy sheet in the space between the elements with this space being sufficiently narrow that entry of the leading edge of the copy sheet into the space clutches the elements together to move as a unit to carry the copy sheet around to a location at which the clutch automatically releases as the leading edge of the copy sheet enters the nip between an upper metallic delivery roller and a lower delivery roller which moves with the first clutch member. Any suitable device, such as a mechanical finger, a jet of air or the like may be employed to direct the leading edge of the sheet into the clutch. The apparatus incorporates one or more elements for directing second sheets of misfed double feeds back to the delivery rollers thus to prevent the second sheet from wrapping around the cleaning roll of the machine.
