    • The application layer of a first wireless device may be configured to receive a ranging request indication from a MAC layer of the first wireless device, determine whether the MAC layer should respond to the ranging request, and send a ranging response to the MAC layer with an indication of whether to respond to the ranging request. The MAC layer may be configured to decode a ranging set-up request from a second wireless device, where the ranging set-up request comprises time slots. If an auto-response is set to false, send a ranging request indication to the application layer and receive from the application layer a ranging response, and if the auto-response is set to true or the ranging response indicates the MAC layer should respond to the ranging set-up request, select a time slot, and encode a ranging response with an indication of the selected time slot.

    • Embodiments of a Neighbor Aware Networking (NAN) device, NAN proxy device, and method for service discovery in a wireless network are generally described herein. In some embodiments, the NAN device may transmit a service discovery frame (SDF) for a subscription to a service. The SDF may indicate a registration for the service with a detected NAN proxy device. The NAN device may receive a service availability message from the NAN proxy device during one or more reception periods, which may be based at least partly on timing information included in the SDF. The subscription may enable reception of content at the NAN device from one or more other NAN devices as part of the service. The NAN device may further refrain from reception of messages during a sleep period exclusive to the reception periods.

    • Embodiments provide a device profile mechanism for wireless devices. Many embodiments comprise a medium access control (MAC) sublayer logic to build frames comprising a device profile index element for a first device. Embodiments may facilitate access by a second device to a device profile for the first device without communication of the entire device profile from the first device. In some embodiments, the second device may access a storage medium integrated with or accessible to the second device to determine the device profile. Some embodiments may store the device profile index element in memory, in logic, or in another manner that facilitates transmission of the device profile index element in frames. Some embodiments may receive and detect communications with the device profile index element. Further embodiments may generate and transmit a communication with the device profile index element.
