    • Rubbery polymers made by anionic polymerization can be coupled with tin halides or silicon halides to improve the characteristics of the rubber for use in some applications, such as tire treads. In cases where the rubbery polymer was synthesized utilizing a polar modifier it is difficult to attain a high level of coupling. This invention is based upon the unexpected finding that coupling efficiency can be significantly improved by conducting the coupling reaction in the presence of a lithium salt of a saturated aliphatic alcohol, such as lithium t-amylate. This invention discloses a process for coupling a living rubbery polymer that comprises reacting the living rubbery polymer with coupling agent selected from the group consisting of tin halides and silicon halides in the presence of a lithium salt of a saturated aliphatic alcohol. The lithium salt of the saturated aliphatic alcohol can be added immediately prior to the coupling reaction or it can be present throughout the polymerization and coupling process. Lithium t-amylate reacts with water to form t-amyl alcohol during steam stripping. Since t-amyl alcohol forms an azeotrope with hexane, it co-distills with hexane and can contaminate recycle feed streams. This problem of recycle stream contamination can be solved by using metal salts of cyclic alcohols that do not co-distill with hexane or form compounds during steam stripping which co-distill with hexane. Thus, the use of metal salts of cyclic alcohols is preferred for this reason and because they are considered to be environmentally safe.

    • It has been unexpectedly determined that isoprene-butadiene rubber having a high glass transition temperature within the range of about −40° C. to about −25° C. (high Tg IBR) can be loaded with silica as a filler and utilized in manufacturing tire treads that have outstanding performance characteristics. For instance, such tire treads offer lower hysteresis at high temperatures (improved rolling resistance) and higher hysteresis at low temperatures (improved wet traction characteristics). By utilizing high Tg IBR in tire tread compounds, the maximum benefits of silica compounding can be realized without the need for solution or emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) in the tread rubber formulations. The tire tread rubber formulations of this invention will normally contain about 20 phr (parts per 100 parts of rubber) to about 100 phr of the high Tg IBR. In other words, the tread rubber will normally contain at least 20 phr of the high Tg IBR and can contain up to 100 phr of the high Tg IBR. The tread compound will also contain 40 phr to 150 phr of a filler with the proviso that at least about 20 phr of silica is included in the filler. The tire tread compound will also contain a silica coupling agent. This invention more specifically discloses a tire tread rubber composition which is comprised of (1) at least about 20 phr of an isoprene-butadiene rubber having a glass transition temperature which is within the range of about −40° C. to −25° C., (2) 40 phr to 150 phr of a filler, with the proviso that the filler contains at least about 20 phr of silica, and (3) a silica coupling agent.

    • Cold flow is a problem that is commonly encountered in the handling and storage of low molecular weight linear rubbers, such as low vinyl polybutadiene rubber and isoprene-butadiene rubber. This invention is based upon the unexpected discovery that the cold flow of such rubbery polymers can be greatly reduced by incorporating a small block of polystyrene therein. The rubbery polymers of this invention which exhibit a low level of cold flow can be synthesized by simply terpolymerizing 1,3-butadiene, isoprene and from about 0.5 phm to about 3 phm of styrene under anionic polymerization conditions in the absence of a polar modifier. It is preferred to utilize batch polymerization techniques. However, continuous polymerization techniques can also be utilized. This invention more specifically disclosed a rubbery polymer which is comprised of polymer chains containing repeat units which are derived from 1,3-butadiene, isoprene and from about 0.5 weight percent to about 3 weight percent styrene, wherein the repeat units which are derived from styrene are in blocks at the ends of the polymer chains, wherein the rubbery polymer has a glass transition temperature which is within the range of about −105° C. to about −65° C. and wherein the rubbery polymer has a number average molecular weight which is within the range of about 50,000 to about 600,000.

    • This invention relates to a tire tread compound that is easily processable which can be used to improve the treadwear, rolling resistance and traction characteristics of tires. The tire tread compounds of this invention are a blend of tin-coupled polybutadiene, high vinyl polybutadiene and natural rubber. This blend of low glass transition temperature rubber and high glass transition temperature rubber is surprisingly easy to process which makes the concept of this invention commercially feasible. Thus, the tire tread compounds of this invention can be utilized in making tires having greatly improved traction characteristics and treadwear without sacrificing rolling resistance. These improved properties may be due, in part, to better interaction and compatibility with carbon black and/or silica fillers. The polybutadiene in the blend can be asymmetrical tin-coupled to further improve the cold flow characteristics of the rubber blend. Asymmetrical tin coupling in general also leads to better processability and other beneficial properties. This invention more specifically discloses a tire tread rubber composition which is comprised of (1) from about 20 phr to about 60 phr of tin-coupled polybutadiene rubber, (2) from about 20 phr to about 60 phr of a rubber selected from the group consisting of natural rubber and synthetic polyisoprene and (3) from about 5 phr to about 40 phr of high vinyl polybutadiene rubber.
