    • A method provides for dynamic data logging in a storage subsystem. The method determines if a plurality of storage devices has been assigned as a plurality of hot spare devices in the storage subsystem. If the plurality of hot spare devices are assigned, the method determines from the plurality of hot spare devices whether a plurality of storage types with a maximum number of spare devices is present. If a plurality of storage types is present, the method selects a hot spare device from a storage type having the smallest capacity to assign as a logging device, otherwise, the method calculates a plurality of ratios of a first number of storage devices of a shared storage type to a second number of storage devices to which the first number of storage devices can act for as hot spare devices, selecting a storage device with the lowest ratio as the logging device.

    • A storage array disposed in a data storage system is reconfigured. A data storage system is supplied comprising a plurality of data storage devices, wherein each of the plurality of data storage devices is assigned to one of a plurality of data storage arrays, or is assigned as a spare device. An unassigned data storage device is detected. If any of the plurality of data storage arrays comprises an intermixed data storage array, the storage array is reconfigured to restore the intermixed data storage array to a homogeneous technology class comprising the unassigned device. If any of the plurality of data storage arrays comprises a degraded data storage array, the storage array is reconfigured to restore the degraded storage array to optimal reliability, optimal performance, and optimal efficiency.

    • A data storage domain is provided to determine a set of signal conditioning parameters for data being transmitted over smart cables in a data storage domain between an SAS switch and SAS expanders and among SAS expanders. A first expander interrogates any attached smart cables for cable persistent data and captures in a table the cable persistent data. One or more interfaces of the first expander are operated at a first data rate. The switch collects the captured cable persistent data and, in response, determines a set of signal conditioning parameters for data being transmitted on each attached smart cable. The set of signal conditioning parameters includes a first maximum data rate for each attached smart cable. The signal conditioning parameters are then set for each attached smart cable in accordance with the set of determined signal conditioning parameters, whereby the data storage domain is tuned for optimum signal transmission.

The method provides (N) contiguous first sectors comprising a first sector format to a sector format conversion device which includes a buffer and a data queue, where those (N) first sectors comprise a first number of bytes, and determines that (M) contiguous second sectors, comprising a second sector format, comprise at least the first number of bytes. The method overlays the (i)th first sector onto part or all of the (j)th second sector, and enqueues the newly-overlain (j)th second sector. The method then transmits the newly-overlain (j)th second sector to a data storage device, and writes that (j)th overlain second sector to an information storage medium.
