    • 1,074,239. Sawing. OMARK INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 22, 1964 [Sept. 23, 1963], No. 38626/64. Heading B5L. A cutter link for a chain saw comprises a link body 38 having a cutting element 42 projecting outwardly from the body and including a shank 48 which has a portion offset laterally with respect to the body and a top plate 50 forming a continuation of the shank and bent laterally over the body to terminate on the opposite side of the body, the top plate extending longitudinally of the link, being inclined forwardly and outwardly from the rearward end to the forward end of the top plate, and having an outer surface 59 at the forward end extending rearwardly and inwardly from the forward face 58 to the rearward face 56 to provide a kerf bottom cutting edge (60, Fig. 2) at the intersection of the outer surface and forward face, and a forwardly directed kerf side cutting edge 68 on the forward portion of the shank intersecting the kerf bottom cutting edge 60. Left and right hand cutting links 16, 17 may be incorporated in a chain saw having side links 18 and centre drive links 12, the centre links may have protrusions 14 for sliding in the groove in a cutter bar 32 of a machine and for engagement by a sprocket 28 and may be shorter than the side and cutter links to provide spaces for the teeth of the sprocket which thereby drive the chain on a line passing through the axes of the pivots 22 joining the links. The latter feature, together with interengaging gear teeth 24 on the ends of the side and cutter links, is stated to reduce unwanted movement of the cutter links as they pass over the sprocket and are sharpened by a grinding wheel 72. The shank 48 of the cutting element of the links is bent outwardly by about 5 degrees from the medial plane of the link and the top plate is bent so as to be at about 105 degrees to the medial plane and 40 degrees to a line joining the pivots of the link. The front edge of the shank 48 is chamfered at 62 to produce the kerf side cutting edge 68, and thet op plate is formed with the outer surface 59 to produce the kerf bottom cutting edge (60, Fig. 2) which is inclined to the direction of travel of the chain; the cutting edges intersect at a point 20. Each cutter link is also formed with a depth gauge element 40 having an outer surface 46 on the same arc as the outer surface 59, the rearmost end 47 of the depth gauge being a greater distance forwardly of the midpoint of the line joining the pivot than the point 70 is rearwardly of the midpoint.
