    • An optical connector is disclosed for terminating an optical cable 10 comprising a plastic optical fiber 11 surrounded by a protective jacket 12. The connector includes a housing having an exterior latch 201 that secures it to an adapter 31. The latch is constructed as a cantilever with its fixed end positioned toward a front end of the housing. The connector further includes a cable-holding structure that attaches to the jacket of the optical cable in such a manner that the plastic optical fiber 11 connects to an associated optical device without the use of a ferrule. One cable-holding structure includes a guide tube 45 that is made from metal and is pressed, or insert molded, into the back end of one plastic housing 40. A portion of the guide tube protrudes from the back end of the housing and is crimped onto the optical cable. Here, the optical cable is immovably attached to the housing. Another cable-holding structure includes an extender cap 21, a spring 60, and a guide tube 15 having an enlarged diameter at one end 16. The spring surrounds the tube and presses against its enlarged end. The spring also presses against an interior surface of the extender cap, which inserts into the back end of another plastic housing 22. Here, the optical cable is movably attached to the housing.

    • Allowing the ability to specify a general frame format and to automatically recognize similar frames at later points in time. A user initially selects the type of frame by watching a particular program such as the weather portion of a newscast and selects the desired frame using a hand-held control unit similar to the present hand-held control units for VCRs or television sets. When the frame appears on the television set, the user presses a button on the hand-held control unit, and the apparatus stores the frame that is presently being displayed. The apparatus then analyzes the stored frame to determine a set of recognition parameters. Those parameters are used to recognize similar frames in subsequent broadcast segments and to store one of those recognized frames for each broadcast segment. The user also specifies a time period during which the system will search for the specified frame. Further, the audio portion of a program segment is stored as long as frames are being recognized in that segment.

    • An apparatus that allows a pager to select a telecommunication terminal to which a telecommunications switching system terminates all incoming calls destined for the user of the pager. The selection is made under control of the user. The pager request that communication terminals transmit their identities to the pager. The pager then displays the identities of communication terminals to the user who selects one of the communication terminals to be the selected communication terminal. In response to the selection by the user, the pager signals the selected communication terminal. In turn, the selected communication terminal signals the telecommunications switching system that all incoming calls for the user of pager are to be terminated on the selected communication terminal.

    • A timing control arrangement that dynamically controls the distribution ofiming information in a distributed digital communication system. A reference timing signal is distributed from a reference master node to all other nodes in the system. The distribution is accomplished on a dynamic basis without the use of a central control. Each node is connected by links to at least one other node and each node receives timing signals from all of the links to which it is connected. Each node selects one of these signals as its timing reference by scanning the various signals it receives to identify the one signal that is applied via a link path that is the "closest" to the master reference node as indicated by information specifying the number of intermediate nodes through which the timing signal has traveled from the reference node to reach the receiving node. This decision is based on a set of bits included in the timing signal transmitted by each node indicating the number of intermediate nodes between itself and the reference node.
