    • A vapor recovery nozzle includes a spout construction comprising an outer aluminum tube and an inner nylon tube. The distal ends of the tubes are joined so that the inner tube defines an central fuel passage and, in combination with the outer tube, defines a generally annular vapor return passage. a distal end portion of the outer tube has a reduced wall thickness and its inner end is expanded to mount a locator ring thereon. The spout assembly is telescoped into an adapter that connects the fuel and vapor passages to corresponding passages in the nozzle body. A spout nut threads into the nozzle body and engages the locating ring to mount the spout on the nozzle. The outer spout tube is formed by lathe operations which include turning a fracture groove adjacent its inner end, and, thereafter bending the tube to angle the distal end portion of the tube downwardly from its inner end. A second embodiment teaches the use of structural, synthetic resins in forming the outer spout tube. In alternate embodiment the outer spout tube is compositely formed an outer end portion that provides increased strength for the that portion, where a thin wall tube is employed.

    • A vapor recovery valve that includes two mechanisms for opening the valve is disclosed. The first mechanism opens the valve when fuel is being dispensed by a fuel delivery system. The second mechanism selectively opens the valve independent of whether the fuel delivery system is dispensing fuel. A method for dry testing a vapor recovery system is also disclosed. The method involves disabling the fuel dispensing capability of the fuel delivery system, and then operating the vapor recovery system at a rate that corresponds to a predetermined imaginary fuel dispensing rate. Next, the vapor recovery path is opened, and its operation is measured and determined if it is sufficient for the imaginary fuel delivery rate.

    • An apparatus for detecting leaks in a pipeline in a liquid dispensing system. The apparatus generally includes a tank containing a liquid, a dispenser valve disposed remote from the tank, a pipeline connected between the storage tank and the dispenser valve, a pump at the tank for supplying liquid under pressure to the pipeline and an isolation valve between the pump and the dispenser valve to isolate the pump pressure from the pressure in the pipeline between the isolation valve and the dispenser valve. The apparatus further has a pressure sensor between the isolation valve and the dispenser valve for measuring any pressure change in the pipeline between the isolation valve and the dispenser value. A leak simulation valve alternatively may be provided for draining the pipeline to simulate a leak.

    • An emergency valve is provided to shut off the flow of fuel in the event a fuel dispenser is struck with sufficient force to rupture the fuel conduit means therefor. The valve comprises a lower housing connected to a source of pressurized fuel and an upper housing connected to conduit means which extend to a dispensing nozzle. The upper housing has a groove which defines the plane of a weakened portion. When the impacted with a relatively high lateral force, the portion of the upper housing, above the groove, will separate, or break away. A normally open, main control, flapper valve is mounted in the lower housing. A poppet check valve is mounted in the upper housing. When the separable portion of the upper housing breaks away, both the flapper valve and the check valve automatically close to minimize spillage of fuel. A bleed valve is provided to relieve pressure in the fuel conduit means to which the separable portion of the upper housing is connected, in the event a fire occurs upon its breaking away. In one embodiment the check valve yieldingly engages a seat formed in the upper end of the upper housing, immediately above the notch and is opened by fuel flow pressure. In another embodiment the check valve is normally held open by a post projecting upwardly from a bridge mounted beneath the groove. In a third embodiment, the poppet valve is also held in an open position by a similar post and is engageable with a seat formed in the upper staff ace of the upper housing. The upper housing and check valve comprises a replacement unit which can be mounted on existing lower housing to provide the benefits of the present invention or to replace an upper housing when an accident occurs.

    • A manhole sealing device enables the recovery of vapors displaced from a tank during the process of filling a tank with fuel, through the manhole. The sealing device comprises a sealing gasket, which has an inflation chamber defined by two tubular walls. When the chamber is inflated, the gasket is distended to toroidal configuration capable of sealing engaging manhole inner diameters of a wide dimensional range. The sealing gasket is mounted on a lock-down bar what is clamped against the upper end of the manhole, using bolts that are also used in clamping the hatch cover for the manhole. Preferable the gasket is first inflated to centralize it relative to the manhole and then clamped in fixed relation relative thereto.
