    • An electromagnetic transducer assembly includes a carriage 30 carrying a first transducer 33 projecting therefrom and a load arm 35 carrying a second transducer 32 arranged for gimballing movement about a pair of mutually perpendicular axes, the arm being connected to the carriage by a leaf hinge assembly 43 for movement to load or unload transducer 32 to the disk recording medium 20. The transducers have planar disk engaging faces surrounded by edge bevels which merge smoothly with each other at conical corner surfaces 144, 157, and which are blended smoothly into the faces. The second transducer 32 is mounted in the arm on a flexure member 65, which also mounts a connector block 75 to which a flex strip 81 is connected, and which includes eyelet pins for facilitating the wiring of the transducer coils. The arm has an aperture 60 near the end which includes transducer 32 which permits access thereto during assembly. Insert cover 120 fits the aperture and includes a lifting tab 122, and an adjustable pivot member 133 for the gimballing of the transducer. The base includes ramps 160, 161 for facilitating the insertion and removal of a diskette 21 into operative position with respect to the transducers. The hinge assembly includes a leaf spring 44 and means 45-47, 52, 53 clamping it to the arm and to the base. A spring 55 urges the arm in a first direction about the hinge, and acts as a cover for passages 83-86 leading a connection cable 80 to the flex strip.

    • A pickup arm cartridge houses a fragile signal pickup assembly of a video disc record player to (1) protect the signal pickup assembly during storage and handling, and (2) facilitate replacement of the signal pickup assembly without any critical manual adjustments or connections. A signal pickup assembly comprises a pickup arm carrying a signal pickup at one end and having its remote end secured to a coupler by a compliant pickup arm support. The coupler is suspended in the pickup arm cartridge such that the suspension, while permitting translatory motion of the coupler, (1) maintains angular orientation of the pickup in signal transfer relation with a disc record, and (2) positions the coupler for engagement with a translatory motion imparting transducer of the player supporting structure when the cartridge is assembled in the player. A leaf spring securely holds the signal pickup assembly in the cartridge during storage and handling. Means are provided for disabling the leaf spring during playback thereby disposing the signal pickup subject to engagement with the disc record.

    • A cartridge casing houses a fragile pickup arm unit of a video disc record player to, (1) protect the pickup arm unit during storage and handling, and (2) facilitate ready replacement of the pickup arm unit without need for any connections and adjustments. The pickup arm unit comprises a pickup arm carrying a signal pickup at one end and having its second end secured to a coupler by a compliant pickup arm support. The pickup arm unit is suspended at the second end within the casing by a pair of tabs secured to the coupler and extending therefrom for reception in a pair of openings provided in the casing. A clamp pivotally mounted in the casing engages the pickup arm to securely hold the signal pickup end of the pickup arm unit in a retracted position in the casing when the cartridge is in an unassembled condition. A finger mounted in the player supporting structure engages and disables the clamp during assembly of the cartridge in the player to free the pickup arm for engagement with a signal pickup lowering/lifting mechanism mounted in the supporting structure.

    • In a flexible disk magnetic storage device, a suspension assembly for holding a transducing head in proper transducing relationship to a target disk regardless of the radial position of the track. The assembly incorporates a chamber which is filled with gaseous fluid and expanded in order to move a chamber enclosing member with a transducing head mounted thereon. The head is moved axially into transducing relationship with the disk surface and continues to move until the disk surface exerts counter-balancing axial forces on the head to prevent further movement. An escape path is provided so that a small amount of fluid continually escapes from the chamber equal to the rate at which fluid is introduced into the chamber when all axial forces are in balance. Such an assembly damps the rapidity of any change in axial position of the head induced by variations of the flexible disk surface away from a constant plane during rotation.The assembly also provides a constant mating force of head to disk over a working range of axial head movement by providing an escape path of constant length, i.e., constant flow resistance.
