    • A guitar or similar musical instrument with a resonator cone insert has been improved in several respects. My improvements include the development of a structural support ring made of graphite with circumferentially aligned strengthening fibers integrated within the circumference of the support structure, a sealing ring for sealing the cone cover in the structural support ring, the sealing ring being tubular in cross section and compressed to a figure-8 cross section to create additional pressure for holding the cover plate in place securely and eliminating "rattling" of the cover plate to distract from the sound of the instrument. Another feature of the design of the present invention is the provision of a interlocking connection between the structural support ring and the resonator support ring which allows one to change the size, shape and configuration of the resonator support ring to create different sounds. Further, my invention includes a section of the butt of the instrument bevelled at an angle to the plane of the face of the instrument to facilitate variations in string tension which will allow variations in the tonal quality and output of the instrument. An alternative structure provides for a cantilevered tail piece, the angle of which can be varied, in order to vary the pressure on the bridge and saddle of the instrument. Finally, my design includes variations in the ports contained within the instrument in order to improve the quality of output. I also provide a new and improved tuning machine roller which can be of variable diameter to allow tuning of the instrument in a more defined manner even when strings of different materials or diameters are used.

    • A string instrument of the invention is capable of producing a stable amount of sounds from a low sound region to a high sound region. A vibration mode is measured when the frequency of a basic vibration of strings becomes equal to that of a basic frequency of a top plate, and two stiffeners of predetermined lengths are attached on the rear surface of a top plate along two nodal lines appearing on the top plate in that vibration mode. The stiflenets do not affect in a low sound region but causes the vibration mode to change in a high sound region, thereby making it possible to produce increased amounts of sounds in every sound region, particularly that on E-line which has been thought to be difficult for a conventional violin to produce.

    • The invention relates to a device for the transfer of string vibrations to the outer walls of a hollow body. The strings are stretched over a bridge in the conventional manner and the bridge transfers the movements to a mobile wall of the hollow body. This narrow wall with a relatively small surface does not mainly vibrate the surrounding air and instead transfers via supports the string vibrations to two large-area hollow body walls positioned below it. The bearing points of the bridge on the hollow body narrow wall, the hollow body walls and the supports are arranged in such a way that in the case of a bridge vibrating movement direction following the string vibrations, the large surfaces of the hollow body are moved in opposite directions. The large surfaces mainly vibrate the surrounding air, on the one hand directly through the movements thereof on the hollow body surface and on the other hand indirectly by the pumping action of the oppositely moving large surfaces on the air within the hollow body, which in turn excite the ambient air by corresponding wall openings. The transfer mechanism permits larger vibrating walls with larger vibration amplitudes and a larger hollow body for comparable instruments, so that the strings give more sound for the same excitation energy.

    • The invention relates to the manufacture of a violin (and other instruments of the violin family), in which the component parts of the acoustic box are made from sheet material. The sheet material is composed of substantially unidirectionally oriented man-made fibres, for example of carbon or boron, set in a matrix of epoxy resin. Thus the fibres are substantially all aligned from end to end in the front plate and in the back plate, we well as in the lengths of the side pieces and bass bar. Using this alignment of fibres that have a high modulus of elaticity, coupled with relatively low specific gravity and low flexural friction in vibration, a design for an instrument's acoustic box is specified which provides for instruments having vibrational systems, similar to that found in traditional instruments, but in which, for the same loudness of sound propagated, there are substantial economies in the proportional of force inherent in a vibration that is deployed in propagating sound.
