    • An ignition element (106) for heating temperature sensitive ignitable material (86) in an air bag inflator comprises an electrically conductive first material layer (142). An electrically conductive second material layer (144) has a portion (146) spaced from and overlying a portion (148) of the first material layer (142). A lossy dielectric material (180) is disposed between the overlying portions (146, 148) of the first and second material layers (142, 144). A high frequency alternating electric field is applied to the first and second material layers (142, 144). The temperature sensitive material (86) is located adjacent the ignition element (106). The temperature of the dielectric material (180) increases to a temperature sufficient to cause ignition of the temperature sensitive material (86) in response to the application of the high frequency alternating electric field to the dielectric material.

    • An exploding foil initiator for operation with perforating gun assemblies or other equipment placed in a well borehole is set forth. This device utilizes a foil bridge adjacent to a flyer layer and a barrel having a central bore. When the foil bridge is vaporized, a disk is cut by the bore, and is directed through the bore of the barrel, traveling at a high velocity to deliver impact against a secondary explosive. The secondary explosive is formed of BRX explosive which is a pellet of explosive material of 1,3,5-trinitro-2,4,6-tripicrylbenzene. Detonation is accomplished with a high voltage, high current pulse of substantial voltage amplitude of about 1100 to not more than about 2000 volts.

    • An apparatus for igniting gas generating material includes a container having ignitable material for igniting the gas generating material upon ignition of the ignitable material. The ignitable material ignites when heated to a predetermined temperature. The ignitable material includes booster material and auto-ignition material which ignites when heated to the predetermined temperature. The ignitable material is a homogeneous mixture of the booster material and the auto-ignition material and has a ratio by weight of the booster material to the auto-ignition material of between 1.25 to 1 and 30 to 1. The booster material is a BKNO.sub.3 based compound and the auto-ignition material is a smokeless powder which ignites at a temperature in the range of 300.degree. F.-400.degree. F.
