    • A method is presented for stabilizing the flame on the tips of burner internals in a process for preparing synthesis gas by partial oxidation of a gaseous hydrocarbon-containing fuel. The method comprises supplying a gaseous hydrocarbon-containing fuel, a moderator gas and an oxidizer through a burner to a reactor, and adjusting the mass flow of the moderator gas such that the moderator gas concentration does not exceed a predetermined limit. The process conditions are effected such that the flame contacts the burner internal tips. In case of flame-lifting from the burner internal tips, the velocities and mass flows of the fuel and/or oxidizer and/or moderator gas are re-adjusted in such a manner that the flame is restabilized on the burner internal tips.

    • An improved method of reducing the amount of sulfur dioxide in combustion gases generated by the combustion of a sulfur-containing fuel in a combustion chamber. The improved method comprises introducing a sorbent composition capable of interacting with sulfur dioxide into a zone of the combustion chamber above the fuel and flame area, such that the sorbent composition is distributed throughout the combustion gases and interacts with sulfur dioxide to remove sulfur dioxide from the combustion gases in the form of a solid inorganic sulfate. The sorbent composition introduced into the combustion chamber comprises: (a) 100 parts by weight of a sorbent; and (b) about 0.25 parts to about 60 parts by weight of an enhancer, said enhancer comprising: (i) about 15% to about 75%, by weight of the enhancer, of a hydrated inorganic salt; (ii) about 25% to about 85%, by weight of the enhancer, of a clay; and (iii) 0% to about 10%, by weight of the enhancer, of a combustible liquid.

    • A method and apparatus are employed to reduce the sulfur dioxide produced by the combustion of a sulfur-containing fule in a combustion chamber. Part of the combustion air is introduced into the combustion chamber with and closely adjacent the fuel. Another part of the combustion air is introduced into the combustion chamber above and downstream of the fuel and relatively remote therefrom under conditions which buffer the flame front and reduce peak flame temperatures therein. Finely divided limestone particles or the like are aspirated into the combustion chamber by the air introduced above the fuel and distributed thereby throughout the gases flowing downstream through the combustion chamber wherein the limestone particles are calcined to lime particles which react with the sulfur dioxide in the combustion reaction gases to produce calcium sulfate. There is no premixing of the particles and the aspirating air before they enter the combustion chamber. Various parameters are controlled to produce the desired results.
