    • An oscillating bearing is disclosed for a variable-displacement axial piston hydraulic machine having a swashplate with a convex semi-cylindrical bearing face with provisions for attaching the oscillating bearing, and a housing with a concave semi-cylindrical bearing saddle. The oscillating bearing includes thin outer and inner race members having centered openings and formed in arcs congruent with the concave surface of the bearing saddle of the housing and the convex bearing face of the swashplate, respectively. The outer race member has support means on at least one axial end for supporting a timing member which engages a timing feature of the swashplate and synchronizes motion for all parts of the oscillating bearing, and the inner race member has means for holding the inner race against the convex bearing face of the swashplate. A separator is interposed between the inner and outer race members, the separator being formed in an arc having inner and outer surfaces parallel to the proximal surfaces of the race members, the separator also having an axially centered opening and two additional substantially rectangular openings axially spaced from the axial ends of the separator and the centered opening. The additional openings serve as pockets for anti-friction rollers. The separator further has one axial end which extends beyond the proximal axial ends of the inner and outer races and which includes a timing notch for engaging the timing member.

    • The invention is intended to facilitate surface processing for generation of dynamic pressure and to prevent degradation of the bearing performance due to temperature changes. To this end, a shaft is composed of an axially magnetized magnet and shafts of magnetic material holding the magnet therebetween. The shaft is press-fitted in an insertion hole in a non-magnetic sleeve. Pole pieces are placed on the upper and lower edges of a hole in a motor hub. Clearances defined by the outer peripheral surface of the sleeve and the inner peripheral surface of the motor hub are filled with a magnetic fluid. In order to generate a dynamic pressure in the magnetic fluid, surface processing is applied not to the magnet but to the outer peripheral surface of the sleeve. Further, the thermal expansion coefficient of the sleeve is greater than that of the motor hub.

    • A system is described that uses acoustic energy to position an object, which simplifies the application of forces in defined directions to the object and which enables the application of large forces to the object. The system includes transducers (21-24, FIG. 1) that direct separate acoustic beams (31-34) at the object (12), with the system constructed so the beams do not create standing wave patterns. A plurality of beams whose phases at the object are not closely controlled, are directed at different surface areas of the object so the beams do not substantially overlap at the object and create possible canceling effects. A very large force is applied to the bottom (124 FIG. 8) of an object lying in a gravity environment, by directing a plurality of beams (141-145) at the same area at the bottom of the object, and with the beams being controlled so they are substantially in phase at the object area. This plurality of beams can also replace one or all of the transducers (21-24, FIG. 1) to provide much stronger forces to position and manipulate the object. The wavelength (B, FIG. 2) of the acoustic energy in each beam is preferably much less than one-tenth the diameter (C) of the object in order to obtain efficient momentum transfer of energy to the object.

    • A rotary roller band device having a central roller disposed within a cluster of orbiting rollers and rows of flexible bands holding the rollers together in a self-supporting structure. The bands are intertwined between the rollers such that as the rollers rotate the bands loop around and between the rollers. The bands engage each of the rollers in a low friction rolling contact that does not require lubrication. The bands each form a C-shaped loop. The central roller is cupped inside the C of each band loop such that the outer surface of each band contacts with the surface of the central roller. The orbiting rollers are concentrically arranged around the central roller and rotate counter to the central roller. Each of the orbiting rollers is disposed inside of the loop of each band such that the outer orbiting rollers engage the inner surface of each band.
