    • A funnelling device for use in a cigarette packing machine is disclosed. Cigarettes are fed into the mouth of a funnel-shaped housing from a container, which contains cigarettes and is mounted above the inlet mouth of the funnel. A displaceable shutter is disposed between the bottom of the cigarette container and the mouth of the funnel to control the flow of cigarettes. The funnel housing comprises vertically extending walls, which define the inlet mouth at the top of the funnel. A pair of deflector members are pivotably mounted in the funnel housing below the mouth. These deflector members are each pivotably displaceable through a predetermined angular displacement about a respective horizontal axis, and each deflector member has an exterior surface portion of substantially spiral-shape centered on the respective axis of rotation. In use, the deflector members are pivotably displaced so as to raise them and, thereby, to raise the level of cigarettes remaining in the funnel-shaped housing during periods when an emptied cigarette container is being replaced by a replenished one. In this way the distance, through which cigarettes have to drop from a replenished container before striking the uppermost layer of cigarettes remaining in the funnel-shaped housing, is minimised. The deflector members are so shaped and mounted that substantially no risk of crushing cigarettes against the walls of the funnel arises when the deflector members are upwardly angularly displaced. Expediently, the deflector members are angularly displaced by displacement means automatically controlled by sensing means, which is responsive to the level of the uppermost layer of cigarettes in the funnel to generate electrical control signals.

    • A rack has pairs of substantially horizontal rails supporting a plurality of mobile supporting frames, for pasta products, which are arranged in the rack in two stacks. Each frame includes a plurality of superposed and individually tiltable buckets. The upper stack comprises empty frames and the lower stack comprises filled frames. An elevator means at one side of the rack moves the frames one by one downwardly from the upper stack to the lower stack with each bucket being filled with pasta products as it moves past a filling device. An elevator means adjacent the opposite side of the rack moves the frames one by one upwardly past a bucket emptying device for discharge of the bucket contents to a conveyor or the like. While the frames may be moved manually along the rails, stepping means preferably are provided to operate in synchronism with the other apparatus elements to shift the frames one by one along the respective rails. As each bucket is tilted to empty its contents, its pouring lip moves along a baffle to prevent falling out of the contents until the pouring lip is aligned with a hopper for receiving the discharged contents.

    • A method and apparatus for transferring solid materials between zones at substantially different pressures which includes, generally, an intermediate vessell or lock hopper which contains a liquid and can be filled with and emptied of solids, two valves, one at each end of the lock hopper, a solids feed device, and a pump to maintain liquid level in the system. In operation, the valve at the upper end of the lock hopper is opened while the valve at the lower end thereof is closed, thereby permitting solids to be transferred into the lock hopper which contains a liquid such as water. The solids displace some of the liquid, and the displaced liquid rises above the top valve and overflows into a collecting vessel. The top valve then is closed, and a pump adds or removes liquid until the pressure in the lock hopper is close to the reactor pressure. The lower or bottom valve is opened after the pressure differential is compensated for, allowing the solids to drop into a feeder which conveys the solids to the reactor. The liquid level in the feeder and the lock hopper is maintained by the pump to replace the volume of solids fed. This liquid level is maintained at a sufficient height to inhibit gas flow into the lock hopper, and is independent of operating pressures. After solids discharge, the bottom valve is closed and the top valve opened, and the cycle is repeated. For continuous solid feed, two or more valved lock lock hoppers can be used in tandem to feed solids to the feeder.

    • This invention relates to a process and an apparatus for spreading granular material for use primarily in a conventional circular storage bin having a floor and a material evacuating unit: the apparatus having a hopper for receiving the material dumped therein through a roof opening by a conventional elevator, and having further a vertically adjustable rotatable pan disposed beneath the hopper for receiving and holding the material, with the upper edge of the pan outer wall disposed above the lower edge of the hopper bottom whereby the pan is not rotated, the pan will fill up with the material and then the throat of the hopper will clog with the material, and including further motorized means operable to rotate the pan so that the material is thrown outwardly of the pan by centrifugal force, the material then falling on the bin floor in a level manner. A switch device is built into one side of the hopper and is responsive to material clogging up the hopper to automatically turn on the motor so as to rotate the pan, thus insuring that no material is discharged into the bin unless the spreader is operating at full capacity.
