    • For the purpose of pouring a stepwise advanced casting mould consisting of identical, flaskless mould parts having vertical joints at which there are provided inlets or chutes extending from the top surface of the mould to its casting cavities, use is made of a pouring tundish having a slitlike bottom outlet adapted to cover three or more inlets temporarily blocked by an obstruction. After an additive has been fed to the tundish this is being filled with the necessary amount of molten iron which prior to removal of the obstruction gets the opportunity of being merged uniformly with the additive, and possible slag products may at the same time rise to the surface. The pouring tundish may meanwhile be advanced one or more steps together with the casting mould while being in firm contact with its top face. After the pouring step has finished the pouring tundish may be disengaged from the casting mould and be returned past the starting position to be fed with additive, and is subsequently ready for a new operation. For a given cycle time of the plant, the period available for the pouring operation may be considerably extended, thereby entailing quality improvements in the produced castings.

    • Molten metal, such as aluminum, is held within rigid refractory lining means beneath, above and alongside the metal while heaters keep the outside of the lining means at a predetermined temperature desired for the metal, the heaters being surrounded by thermal insulation and the whole being surrounded by a fluid-cooled support. An unusually effective embodiment is pipe, with a tubular refractory liner to carry flowing metal, surrounded by sheathed heating elements controlled to keep the exterior of the tube at least at about the predetermined temperature, with the thermal insulation wrapped around the heaters and the enclosing support being a water-jacketed steel pipe. The operation is essentially adiabatic with respect to the refractory liner, delivering the molten metal essentially at its original temperature, with unusual saving of heat energy. When the heated pipeline has been drained, only easily removed, paper-thin skulls of solid metal remain.

    • A method of, and apparatus for, the introduction of steel into the liquid metal pool of a continuous casting mold of a continuous casting installation, wherein a casting jet which is enclosed at its periphery at all sides is guided beneath the level of the molten bath of the liquid metal pool in the continuous casting mold and thereafter deflected out of its original position. The casting jet is guided substantially immediately after its aforesaid deflection substantially only at its underside to impart thereto an upwardly directed flow component, and the upper surface of the casting jet is permitted to freely admix with the steel of the liquid metal pool. The apparatus for the practise of the method comprises a pouring tube for the throughflow of a casting jet and a distributor device cooperating with the pouring tube. The distributor device comprises a distributor plate secured, preferably detachably, at the pouring tube, and the distributor plate has one or more guide surfaces for the casting jet emanating from the pouring tube, which guide surface or surfaces substantially only contact the outflowing casting jet at its underside to impart thereto an upwardly directed flow component in the mold.

    • The invention relates to a process for separating non-metallic inclusions from hot liquid metal and to a casting tube for carrying out such process. The method is employed in continuous casting, in which the metal is permitted to flow into a watercooled mould, if desired via a tundish, whereupon the bar is drawn out of the mould and further cooled. In this process the metal, when flowing through the tundish and/or when entering the mould, is deflected under formation of at least one metal stream directed in upward direction. The length a of this metal stream amounts to from 3 to 30 cm and its speed v is adjusted to increase proportionally thereto in a range of at least 3.5 to 31 cm/sec up to maximally 17.5 to 45 cm/sec so that at the surface of the metal or of the slag or casting powder layer a wave is formed. When a and v are maintained within the mentioned range, a sufficient separation is guaranteed and the formation of turbulences tending to rupture the slag layer is avoided.
