    • An apparatus for stretching sheet-metal strips includes several bending heads removably mounted between pairs of tension rollers, each bending head comprising a slender deflecting roller journaled in two end bearings and supported by heavier, shorter back-up rollers arrayed in two closely adjoining rows. The back-up rollers of each row have stud shafts cradled in V-shaped notches of a multiplicity of parallel webs transverse to their axis, the webs being integral with a common beam swingably mounted on a supporting frame. Oppositely notched retaining yokes are detachably secured to the webs to hold the roller shafts in place and to complement the notches to diamond-shaped seats for these shafts. The bearing notches of all the webs are simultaneously machined and/or trued by the same tool sweeping thereacross.

    • In a stretch-type straightening apparatus for a metal strip of indefinite length running therethrough, between a hold-back roll assembly and a drawing roll assembly there is disposed a bending machine having a plurality of power-driven rolls about which the running strip is trained in an S-shaped path. Each roll pair of the bending machine is driven by a differential gearing while every two said differential gearings are driven by a main differential gearing, the input shaft of which is rotated by a motor means. In this manner the rpm of the successive rolls in the bending machine adjusts itself in accordance with the strip elongation from roll to roll, in order to ensure a slippage-free engagement between any of the rolls in the bending machine and said running strip.

    • This invention relates to apparatus for reshaping both edges of an aluminum strip of 0.2-3.00 mm. in thickness into rounded smooth edges adapted for an electric conductor. The edge of the strip has irregular burrs resulting from slitting of the aluminum strip of commercial width. In operation, the strip is pulled from its coiled supply, through a three-roll assembly, engaged with the groove of the reshaping rolls, through a cleaning chamber, and finally to a recoiler to be coiled again. The reshaping roll is urged by fluid pressure toward the edge so as to treat it with a relatively weak force in order to prevent the roll from damaging the strip.

SUCH A ROLL SPACING GREATLY REDUCES POWER REQUIREMENTS FOR PULLING STOCK THROUGH A STRAIGHTENER, HAS OTHER ADVANTAGES SET FORTH IN DETAIL INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO PIVOTALLY SECURE THE TOP ROLL ARRAY, PERMITTING THE STRAIGHTENER TO BE READILY OPENED WITH SUCH A CONSTRUCTION. THE SPACING BETWEEN ADJACENT ROLLS TOWARD THE EXIT END IS PREFERABLY REDUCED FOR OBTAINING DESIRED OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS AS WELL AS FOR GEOMETRICAL REASONS WHERE THE TOP ROLL ARRAY IS PIVOTALLY MOUNTED.
