    • A variable-reluctance electric motor comprises a stator of ferromagnetic material, having poles provided with induction windings and distributed in four equal groups. The motor is provided with at least one ferromagnetic material rotor ring having equidistant teeth and bearing switching means actuated by the rotation for distributing direct current to the stator windings. The windings and switching means are so combined that, during each advance of the rotor by one tooth pitch, each pole is subjected to two opposite switching operations staggered by a time equal to that taken by the motor for a one-fourth of a tooth pitch rotation. The stator poles are equidistant, each bearing one winding, and are number (4kl), k being at least equal to 2 and l being any number. The rotor has (lm) teeth, m being an odd number greater than (4k). The switching means are so actuated as to switch over the d.c. supply from one stator pole to another one every time the rotor advances by (1/k) of a tooth pitch, and m is so chosen that at any instant energized poles alternate with non-energized ones, except in the stator parts which have just undergone or are about to undergo switching.

    • To obtain in a brushless d-c motor a speed control signal which is dependent both on rotational speed and on armature current in a predetermined mix, each of n armature winding has a diode connected thereto with one terminal, all terminals of the diodes being connected together to provide a first control voltage which coupled out from the windings during current flow therethrough and is representative of a composite of the emf induced by the field of the rotor in the n armature windings and of resistance voltage drop due to the current flow through the respective armature windings; resistors have one terminal, each, connected to the same n respective armature windings and the other terminals together to provide a common resistor junction at which a second control voltage is derived representative of 1/n of the resistance voltage drop due to current flow through said n armature windings. The two control voltages are normalized or weighted with respect to each other, compared, and the comparison is applied to a speed control circuit which will be responsive to armature current and to induced voltages. Positive or negative feedback can be introduced, in dependence on armature current, by affecting the normalization or weighting ratio.

    • The voltages induced in the motor windings of a permanent magnet d-c motor, preferably an axial air gap motor are sensed, halfwave rectified and added in an adder circuit which is connected so that at least a portion of the instantaneous rectified voltages as added, and used as a speed control signal for a speed regulator. The adder circuit may be adjusted in such a way that control signals of double the frequency of modulation with respect to the induced voltages derived from the motor windings at the then instantaneous motor speed are obtained, so that such low speeds as, for example, 33-1/3 rpm, for direct drive of phonograph turntables can be accurately controlled, especially if a motor having a higher number of poles, e.g. 8 poles, is used.

    • A pair of serially connected transducer elements, typically magnetically responsive diodes, are connected across the source of voltage supply; the resistance of the diodes changes, depending on their being subjected to a magnetic field, for example by a permanent magnet rotor. The junction between the serially connected diodes is connected, in turn, to a logic circuit which has a supply terminal input to which a controlled potential can be applied. Depending upon the voltage level at the junction between the transducer elements (magnetic diodes) one or the other output of the logic circuit is connected to the supply terminal so that, upon connection of a controlled voltage (for example representative of a speed control signal) one or the other output terminal is accordingly energized to, in turn, accordingly energize a transistor connected in series with the logic circuit to control current flow through armature windings of the motor.
