    • An optical pickup device includes a light source which emits a light beam. A beam converting system converts the light beam emitted by the light source into a main beam and four side beams so that a main spot and first through fourth side spots are provided on the disk by the main beam and the side beams. The first and the second side spots are at preceding positions to the main spot and the third and the fourth side spots are at following positions to the main spot. The first and the fourth side spots are symmetrical about the main spot and the second and the third side spots are symmetrical about the main spot. A photodetector receives reflection beams of the first through the fourth side spots and outputs signals indicating intensities of the reflection beams of the first through the fourth side spots. A tracking error detector outputs a tracking error signal in response to the signals output from the photodetector.

    • The objective lens of an optical disk drive has a suitable positioning and numerical aperture so that the light beam will be focused into a spot on the optical media of a first optical disk having a cover plate with a first thickness. When a second optical disk is utilized having a cover plate with a second thickness different from the first thickness, a liquid crystal compensator lens is actuated in the optical path between the light source and the objective lens for focusing the light beam into a spot on the optical media of the second optical disk. A correction signal may be applied to the liquid crystal in the compensator lens for altering a refractive index thereof. This substantially eliminates a wavefront aberration in the reflected light beam which would otherwise occur if the beam were focused onto the optical media of the second optical disk solely by use of the objective lens. The lower alignment film of the liquid crystal compensator lens has a cross-section which is approximately sinusoidal in order to complement three waves of aberration (measured from peak-to-valley) in the reflected wavefront.

    • An optical data storage system uses an optical medium made of a stack of spaced-apart optical disks. Each disk in the stack is made of light-transmissive material, such as polycarbonate when the system is a CD-ROM system, and has a partially light-transmissive data layer on at least one of its faces. A focusing lens in the system focuses light to the data layers along optical paths, with each data layer corresponding to a unique optical path length. The light is focused to each data layer by reflection off adjacent data layers such that the total substrate thickness through which the light passes is the same for each optical path. In this manner, the fixed spherical aberration correction provided by the focusing lens is adequate and variable aberration correction is not necessary. By appropriate selection of reflectivities of the multiple data layers in the disk stack, it is possible to design the system so that the effective reflected light intensity from each data layer is the same, and that adjustable signal amplification is not necessary.

    • A method and apparatus for reading digital audio signals photographically recorded on a medium (such as motion picture film). If the medium has multiple, spatially separated digital and analog audio soundtracks, a photosensitive detector array is employed for each of the digital audio soundtrack areas, and a separate analog soundtrack read head is employed. Preferably, digital error code is recorded in a digital soundtrack area of the medium (with digital audio bits), and error detection and correction are performed on the recorded digital audio bits read from the medium. Preferably, the apparatus includes switching circuitry for substituting a corresponding analog audio signal for one or more corrupted digital soundtrack channels, when such digital soundtrack channels have an error rate which exceeds a selected threshold. Also preferably, the invention reads recorded digital audio information by projecting a laser beam (having a near infrared wavelength) on a row of a digital soundtrack area of a motion picture film, to modulate the beam as it passes through the row. The radiation transmitted through each digital soundtrack bit area is projected onto a spot in the detector plane that is substantially larger than the dimension of each individual detector which receives the spot. As the film translates continuously relative to the radiation source so that the projection of the spot translates relative to each receiving detector, the output of each receiving detector is integrated over the period during which a portion of the spot is projected thereon.
