    • A firearm has a body with a bolt assembly reciprocating within the body. A barrel having a bore extends from the body. A gas block with an elongated chamber is connected to the barrel, and a gas passage connects the barrel bore to the gas block chamber. An operating rod has a forward end portion closely received in the gas block chamber and a rear end positioned to operably engage the bolt assembly. The gas block chamber has a forward portion closely receiving the forward end portion of the rod, and the gas block chamber has a rear portion with a profile larger than the forward portion. The forward portion of the rod may be a cylinder, and the rear portion of the gas block chamber may be fluted to provide clearance for flushing out contaminants. The rod may rotate freely to prevent accumulation of contaminants.

    • A gas operated semi-automatic rifle is disclosed having a forwardly moving gas piston located under the discharge end of a barrel. The gas piston is connected to a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is engaged with a breechblock. As the gas piston moves a short distance forward after a round has been fired from the rifle, the locking mechanism moves rearward and disengages from the breechblock. The breechblock is biased rearward by being disengaged from the locking mechanism. The breechblock strips a new cartridge from a magazine, and reloads the rifle.

    • A gas-operated pistol which comprises a frame having a handgrip and adapted to receive a magazine. A slide is mounted for alternating longitudinal movement along the frame. A barrel is provided which is able to pivot at its muzzle end and rotate upwards from a locking engagement via locking means with the frame to allow a cartridge to be removed. An actuating means rotates the barrel upwards after the high pressure period has passed. A cylinder is located above the barrel and communicates with the barrel bore via a passage. The action of propellant gases in the cylinder on the piston urges the slide rearwards. This arrangement reduces the effect of felt recoil on the firer when using very powerful cartridges.

    • An operating system for automatic rifles is described which permits a user to easily remove and replace the bolt and bolt carrier from the rifle, without requiring the user to employ special tools. This invention permits the user to reconfigure the rifle to fire a wide range of different calibers of cartridges, as well as to reconfigure the rifle to feed ammunition from either the top or the bottom of the firearm. This invention further improves the reliability and decreases the manufacturing cost of the operating system by reducing the number of required components. This invention also provides an ergonomic, left hand sided, non-reciprocating cocking handle. The cocking handle assembly is provided with a slot cover which keeps debris from entering the interior of the rifle.

    • A gas pressure adjusting device in the gas-operated mechanism of a gas-operated autoloading shotgun is in the form of a valve assembly comprising essentially a valve seat encompassing a stepped valve opening consisting of adjacent opening parts of different diameters, a valve body having first and second pressure-receiving surfaces and first and second sliding contact surfaces respectively fitted slideably in the valve opening parts, and a spring urging the valve body toward and into closed state against the valve seat. This valve assembly operates with a double action wherein the gas pressure tapped from the barrel bore acts initially on only the first pressure-receiving surface of the valve body and, upon exceeding a predetermined pressure, moves the valve body past a point where it acts also on the second pressure-receiving surface thereby to be released into the outside air. Thus, a low gas pressure produced by a low-base load is not released and positively operates the breech bolt, while a high pressure produced by a high-base load is partly released to prevent excessive impact on moving parts of the shotgun.
