    • A drop tube segment includes a conduit with a first end portion and a second end portion. The drop tube segment further comprises a valve assembly with a valve member associated with the first end portion, a float, and a linkage device pivotally connected with respect to the valve member. The linkage device is adapted for communication with the float such that the float may facilitate in adjusting the position of the valve member with respect to the first end portion of the conduit in response to a liquid level in a liquid reservoir. The drop tube segment further includes a fastening section located at the second end portion of the conduit for fluid tight fastening with an end portion of another drop tube segment. The fastening section comprises a sealing surface and a threaded portion adapted for threaded engagement with a threaded portion of another drop tube segment. The drop tube segment still further includes a sealing member that engages the sealing surface of the fastening section and is adapted to engage a sealing surface of another drop tube segment.

    • An overfill prevention device for storage tanks includes an elongate tubular housing having a liquid flow passageway. A normally open main valve and a normally closed vapor retaining bleed valve are associated with the fluid passageway. Closure of the main valve interrupts the primary flow of liquid through the passageway and closure of the bleed valve prevents any further liquid from entering the tank and also prevents the escape of vapors from the tank. Operation of the main valve is controlled in significant part by a valve latch assembly which is carried by the housing and a relatch assembly which is carried by the main valve. The relatch assembly ensures operative engagement of the main valve with the valve latch assembly upon movement of the main valve from the intermediate position to the open position. Operation of the main valve and vapor retaining bleed valve is also controlled indirectly by a plurality of floats which are maintained in a float chamber extending adjacent the liquid passageway. Deflecting fins are also provided in the fluid passageway for preventing damage to the main valve when an elongate measuring member such as a gauge pole is inserted into the tank for measuring the level of liquid therein.

    • A liquid storage tank overfill prevention assembly that includes an outer housing, an insert that includes fill flow ports, a shut-off sleeve to slowly close off the flow ports and a float member for controlling the sleeve in response to the rise of the stored liquid level. As the product flows through the assembly it is diverted through flow ports in the insert to the inside of the outer body and through the fill pipe installed in the bottom of the valve. As the product level in the tank increases, the float rises and the shut-off sleeve relatively slowly covers or closes the flow ports in the insert. The shut-off is gradual and no hydraulic shock is felt through the valve. For further benefit, the shape of the shut-off sleeve diverts the liquid flow steam through the ports and is shaped to maintain substantial laminar liquid flow until the liquid exits the ports into the housing interior. Thus, resistance or decrease in the liquid flow rate is minimized notwithstanding this diversion and maximum flow rates can be achieved when the ports are fully open for the rapid filling of the tank.

    • An automatic shut-off valve assembly for controlling the fill level in liquid storage tanks, sized to fit through existing filler pipes, includes a tubular body having a flow-blocking diverter plate on the lower end, a series of peripheral through-ports disposed upstream of the diverter plate and a concentric sleeve slidably mounted on the valve body and responsive to longitudinal forces transmitted through a pivotable linkage from a cantilevered float. The linkage permits the float to be extended downward along the valve axis for insertion into the tank, then to rotate outward into a cantilevered position. As the float rises in response to the buoyant force of the rising liquid, the sleeve is urged downward by the linkage to sealingly block the ports and limit flow of liquid through the valve. The tank fill level can be selected by adjusting lengths and angles of linkage members or by manipulating the angle and depth of the valve assembly in the tank.

    • A two stage float actuated shutoff valve for preventing overfilling of an underground storage tank has a first float actuated valve flapper movable to a closed position to block a major portion of the fuel inlet passage of the underground tank when the level of fuel in the tank rises to a first predetermined level. Closure of the first valve blocks a first portion of the flow passage while maintaining a second portion of the flow passage open to permit a reduced flow of fuel through the flow passage, thereby generating an observable water hammer effect signalling that the filling operation should be terminated. If the incoming flow is not terminated, the continued rise of the level of fuel in the tank will in time actuate a second float controlled valve to completely close the fuel inlet passage. The incoming fuel is supplied from a delivery truck tank, fuel flowing gravitationally from the truck tank through an operable shutoff valve on the tank, a delivery hose and a drop tube into the underground tank. Once closed, the second float controlled valve will remain closed as long as the truck tank shutoff valve is open, upon closure of the truck tank shutoff valve the resulting reduction of the hydraulic head on the second valve is reduced to a head which can be overcome by a spring biasing the second valve to its open position to so that fuel can be drained from the delivery hose and drop tube into the underground tank.

    • A drop tube employed in the discharge of fuel into a storage tank of the type having an inlet, riser pipe is described. The drop tube a tubular member and an overfill valve. The overfill valve comprises a valve member having open and closed positions which is controlled by a float mounted thereon. The drop tube is insertable through the riser pipe to a position wherein the float displaces the valve member towards its closed position when the fuel in the tank reaches a desired level. A depression in the tubular member receives the float to facilitate insertion of the drop tube through the riser pipe. The valve member is freely pivotal from its open position to its closed position, being displaced thereto by the force of fuel discharged into the tank. A pressure relief valve is provided to reduce the forces on the valve. A bleed valve is also provided for bleeding fuel from above the valve when it is in its closed position. Further mechanism, actuated by the float, close the bleed valve when the level of fuel is at a predetermined height above its desired level.
