    • A two pathway exhaust and water discharge through-hull system is coupled to a muffler for separating exhaust gases and cooling water at operating speeds such that at low engine speeds exhaust gases and water are discharged through a first outlet preferably above the waterline and, when the engine speed is increased above a predetermined level, exhaust gases are discharged through a second outlet which communicates with a streamlined, low back-pressure underwater discharge skeg and water is discharged through the first outlet. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a discharge skeg is positioned at each comer of the transom for a twin engined vessel. In a preferred embodiment also, each of the underwater discharge skegs is mounted to the bottom of the hull and includes a mounting flange and an upwardly extending collar which extends through the hull and is coupled to an adapter for coupling the discharge skeg to an exhaust outlet of a muffler. As a result, an exhaust system is provided which is efficient, quite and which discharges exhaust gases underwater and away from the vessel when underway at normal operating speeds.

    • A propeller for a marine propulsion system that provides variable length exhaust paths depending upon the speed of the boat and motor. The propeller includes a propeller hub and an exhaust tube positioned within the propeller hub. The exhaust tube extends past the aft end of the propeller hub and defines a first exhaust passageway. A second exhaust passageway is positioned between the propeller hub and the exhaust tube. The second exhaust passageway is shorter than the first exhaust passageway. At low speeds, engine exhaust exits the longer first passageway, while at moderate speeds, engine exhaust exits the shorter second passageway. Therefore, the effective length of the exhaust path varies depending upon the speed of the motor, such that the length of the exhaust path is specifically tuned to several speeds of the motor.

    • A method and apparatus for preventing exhaust fumes from entering the deck area of a motor boat having an engine of the type which has an exhaust port that expels fumes at the rear end of the boat is disclosed. The present invention includes an air manifold located at the rear end of the boat above the exhaust port and adapted to direct air to the rear of the boat. Air ducts having inlets located forwardly of the rear end of the boat are connected to the air manifold. The air manifold assembly is configured to form an air barrier between exhaust fumes and the rear deck area of the boat to prevent exhaust fumes from flowing into the rear deck or the cabin area.

    • An exhaust system for an marine drive discharges exhaust gases between front and rear propellers of a counter-rotating propeller system. The discharge of exhaust gases between the propellers produces a cavitation effect about the rear propeller when accelerating from low speeds. As a result, the drive of the propellers accelerates more rapidly. At high speeds, however, the velocity of the exhaust gases carries the gases over the rear propeller principally in the vicinity of the rear propeller hub. No substantial cavitation effect occurs about the blades of the rear propeller at high speeds. As a result, the discharge of exhaust gases between the propellers causes no significant loss of propulsion efficiency when traveling at high speeds.
