    • This invention pertains to an air-actuated vibrator of the turbine-type in which the rotor and enclosing chamber is contoured so as to provide within the normal operating range a low noise level which is below 80 db (hertz). In association with this chamber is a novel muffler which receives the output from the chamber and reduces the noise level to about 65 db or less which is much below the tolerance level established as acceptable. The rotor is the only moving part in this vibrator and has its periphery formed with small tooth-like transverse serrations but other similar profiles may be used. The tooth profile is of such small size that the driven rotor which is peripherally driven by pressurized air within a normal supply range produces noise levels which are sufficiently low so that the operation of the vibrator in combination with the associated muffler is considered to be virtually silent.

    • A free piston vibrator power source for applications wherein control of vibration frequency, force, and amplitude is important and useful in underwater applications as a sonic generator. The vibrator includes a cylinder and a fluid piston slidably mounted in the cylinder for vibrating reciprocal movement between opposite ends. Valve means is provided for introducing pressurized activating fluid into the cylinder on opposite sides of said piston in response to the position of said piston between opposite ends of said cylinder and a discharge port is provided for exhausting fluid from opposite sides of the piston in response to the position thereof. Fluid storage chambers are provided at opposite ends of the cylinder and rod-like piston members on opposite sides of the piston are slidable in the chambers which contain compressible fluid at pressures independent of the activating fluid pressure.

    • A free-rotor vibrator of the class which includes an outer case containing an internal cylindrical race wherein there orbits a free rotor of lesser diameter. Actuating fluid at relatively high pressure and exhaust fluid at relatively low pressure are respectively supplied to the rotor and exhausted therefrom simultaneously at both ends thereof in order to provide power for the orbital propulsion of the rotor. This is accomplished by providing helically-shaped passages between the race and the case, whereby the radical centrifugal forces of the rotor are resisted by helically-shaped separators, there always being at least one which resists the cantilever-type flexure of the race between the separators.
