    • An apparatus for lowering articles from a building including a tower having a boom extending therefrom. A transfer carriage is slideably mounted on the boom and has a latching mechanism for engagement with an end plate on the boom. The carriage also has a mechanism for engaging a cage as the cage is raised by a cable to the carriage and disengaging the cage when the cage reaches the outer end of the boom. A cable mechanism in cooperation with powered drum members lowers and raises the cage while alternately raising and lowering a second cage which is on a boom with a transfer carriage identical to the first mentioned boom and transfer carriage. The rate of movement of the cable and therefore the rate of travel of the cages is controlled by a hydraulic motor connected to a closed loop conduit, the conduit having an orifice preset to regulate the flow of oil to and from the motor which in turn regulates the speed of the cable drums.

    • An outside rescue elevator system is shown for use on a high-rise building. The elevator system can be installed on existing buildings, as well as being included in new construction. The system includes a dual compartment track mounted vertically on the outside of the building, and a wheeled truck operating within one of the track compartments, and a dual cable system is included with the truck for raising and lowering the truck within the track. A portable elevator cab is connected to the truck, and the cab includes a pair of stabilizing wheels, so that the cab actually rides on a smooth vertical roadbed that extends up the exterior wall of the building. The elevator cab is provided as part of a mobile unit which includes a self-propelled truck, a motor/generator set mounted on a trailer that is pulled by the truck, so that the mobile unit may be stored in a remote location such as a fire department station house, and brought to the scene of a fire emergency at one of a plurality of high-rise buildings that is serviced by this safety system. The motor/generator set serves as an independent power supply for the cable hoist system of the building. Suitable safety measures are employed for maximum security. An important phase of this system is the provision of refuge areas on predetermined floors within the building in cooperation with the outside rescue elevator system for protecting the occupants of the building from smoke and fire during the rescue operation.

    • An escape device for allowing an endangered person to be safely lowered from a drilling tower or other elevated structure includes an automatic brake which controls the descent of a trolley assembly downwardly along an escape cable extending from the elevated structure to a ground level anchor remote from the structure. The automatic brake includes a reel rotatably secured to the elevated structure and a brake cable wound about the reel and attached at one end to the trolley assembly. A fluid pump coupled to the reel causes the reel to rotate at a constant speed when the trolley assembly descends the escape cable. The effective diameter of the reel decreases as the brake cable is unwound therefrom, thereby slowing the rate of descent of the trolley assembly as it approaches the lower end of the escape cable. The escape device is adapted to be used with both the upper and lower stations of a derrick or similar elevated structure.

    • A riding emergency or fire escape apparatus mountable interior of a building for delivering an inhabitant exterior of the building for free fall descent to the ground. The apparatus of this invention exterior of the building essentially comprises plate members mounted in a recess provided in the wall of the building or spaced from the wall of the building a few inches so as not to detract from the architecture of the building. A base plate is provided with a vertically extending zig-zag track. A cover plate overlaying and planularly spaced from the base plate is formed with a vertically extending lineal track. The passenger transport mechanism is provided with a chair and is mountable interior of the building. Similarly arranged base and cover plates containing zig-zag tracks and lineal tracks respectively, are provided at each floor level interior of the building. The tracks of the respective plates align with the corresponding tracks in the fire escape structure exterior of the building through an openable door at each floor level. The passenger transport mechanisms stored at each floor level, comprise a chair connected to a vertically disposed roller trolley frame which is provided with rollers which ride the zig-zag track for a slowed down free fall descent while a second roller rides in the vertical track so that the passenger chair is restrained to a lineal vertical descent.

    • An improved safety and escape mechanism for enabling occupants of upper (second and third) floors of dwellings and other structures to make a quick exodus in case of fire or other emergency comprising bracket means for permanently or detachably securing a centering guide roller on a windowsill, an elongated rope substantially longer than the window to ground dimension, adapted to be passed over the windowsill and roller; basket means at one end of said rope of a size to receive infants, as well as children or adults in a kneeling or standing position, for lowering the same to the ground by an operator inside the window controlling the rate of feed of the rope; and co-operating means on the other end of said rope and on said roller for quickly coupling the same to provide escape means for said operator and other able bodied occupants. The co-operating means can suitably comprise a pair of short rope sections integrally joined to said other end of the rope having loops at the extremities thereof adapted to engage axial extensions at the ends of said roller forming a positive anchoring of said rope to the roller when tension is applied to said rope. Between said loops and rope juncture the short rope sections can be joined by a plurality of rungs to steady an escapee while climbing over the windowsill and preparing to slide down said rope. The basket suitably has a multi-point suspension arranged to minimize contact between the basket and building wall as the basket is being lowered, and a trip line extending from the inner, building, side of the basket to the window frame facilitating dumping of the basket contents when the basket has reached ground level.

    • A portable emergency hoisting method and apparatus are described for use with ground level winching apparatus for moving equipment and personnel about and in rescue operations from the exterior of high rise buildings and the like. Light weight flexible cables are provided with quick release snap shackles for coupling to or about existing building structures, snatch pulleys and loads. A ladder and a cage are provided for hauling equipment and personnel to or from a roof or window on the face of a building. Additionally, anchor cables and snatch pulleys are provided for moving a load line and the cage, if necessary, to other parts of a building without requiring a significant modification or movement of an initial hook-up of anchoring cables and pulleys or ground located winching apparatus. The apparatus described may be deployed and placed in operation within a matter of minutes and moved as rapidly when circumstances require. All equipment and cables are provided with quick release safety coupling members eliminating the use of conventional clamps, nuts, bolts and tools which are easily dropped, lost or misplaced in the confusion of an emergency, and are time consuming to install.
