    • Methods for setting-up a female blanking die for a die cutting machine for die cutting and/or blanking a carton blank, and universal press frames for use in such setting-up are all provided herein. The first stages in the erection of the female blanking die, which includes a rectangular framework of a front rail, a rear rail and two side rails, involve accurate placement of a template within the rectangular framework. All the rails are provided with a dovetail groove along its inside edges. This is achieved by the use of centre line orientation cylinders on a template, a centre line rod through aligned holes in the centre line orientation cylinders and centre line brackets at the precise centre point of the front and the rear rails. The template is mounted atop the centre line brackets by means of the centre line rod and rests loosely on template corner locking clamps. Then the template is secured to the accurately-placed template corner locking clamps in the rectangular frame, and is accurately-positioned and fixed there. The centre line cylinders are then removed and grid orientation cylinders are mounted on the template. A plurality of grid support members are selectively-disposed along the internal perimeter of the rectangular framework by cooperation with the dovetail groove of the rails. The grid comprising a plurality of intersecting rails, the pattern of the intersecting rails having a predefined shape, is disposed within slots within the grip support members and in the grid orientation cylinders and is locked into place in the grid support member. A plurality of jogger members are provided which are selectively-disposed along the internal perimeter of the rectangular framework by means of cooperation with the dovetail groove of the rails, each jogger member having a particularly-recited structure. The plurality of auxiliary adjustable support members may also be selectively-disposed along the internal perimeter of the rectangular framework by means of cooperation with the dovetail groove of the rails. The universal press frame is supported on four legs. When the template is dropped below the universal press frame, and the legs are removed, the universal press frame becomes the female blanking die.

    • A steel rule die for cutting cloth and synthetic materials. The cutting die includes a primary substrate and a plurality of cutting units that are removably attachable to the substrate in such a manner that they are easy to adjust, remove and replace. The cutting units include secondary substrates with lengths of steel rule attached to them to form cutting cavities. Studs mounted to the primary substrate interface with tear-drop shared holes in the secondary substrates with to restrain them against motion perpendicular to the surface of the primary substrate while permitting movement of the cutting units in a horizontal plane with respect to the primary substrate. Adjustable securing rails positioned along the peripheries of the primary substrate are moved toward the fixed securing rails to restrain the secondary substrates against lateral and longitudinal motion. By moving the adjustable securing rails away from the fixed securing rails, the cutting units can be temporarily moved away from each other for cleaning scrap material therebetween. Foam can be disposed between the cutting units to minimize the possibility of scrap material becoming lodged between the cutting units, and aid in the removal of any scrap material that happens to become lodged between the cutting units.

    • A gasket punch and method for forming a gasket hole. The gasket punch is a single piece having a spherical head and a handle whereby the punch may be used to form gasket holes of various sizes up to the spherical head diameter with the gasket material on the machine part or platen and without the necessity of first forming an error prone pattern in the gasket material. The handle may have a diameter which is less than the spherical head diameter whereby the handle may be easily held and manipulated and the amount of material of which the punch is composed may be minimized. In order to provide a suitably small handle diameter without unnecessarily reducing strength and toughness, the gasket punch is preferably composed of forged steel. The gasket hole is formed by aligning the spherical head over the machine part hole with the gasket material therebetween and striking the anvil end of the handle with a hammer or causing the spherical head to impact the gasket material by a machine so that the gasket material is pinched between the spherical head and the machine part or platen hole edge and thereby severed due to the force of impact.
