    • A process for the manufacture of half bearings with flanges rigidly connected thereto, made of a steel plate with an antifriction layer, in which the plain (i.e. not yet flanged) half bearing and a pair of flanges are produced and worked separately, and subsequently the two flanges are fixed, in the correct position, onto the half bearing by a welding operation carried out by projection or by condenser discharge. The preparation and working of the thus separate components results in being very economical owing both to the reduction of the operational costs and to a considerable reduction of the cost of the necessary equipment, and the production times are remarkably reduced. The welding step requires very short times and, by the suitable choice of the process used for the welding operation, no deterioration of the antifriction layer applied to the support steel plate occurs, nor any deformation of the plate itself, so that no further working on the finished piece is required. This latter has a sturdiness adapted to the use of mechanized assembly means.

    • Method of manufacturing a radially corrugated expander-spacer for a piston oil ring assembly, having inner and outer crowns alternately and successively laid, which can prevent its both terminal ends from nesting together during assembling of the piston oil ring assembly. The inner crowns each includes an inner peripheral piece and an opening having a circumferential width larger than that of the inner peripheral piece, and the outer crowns each includes an outer peripheral piece and an opening having a circumferential width larger than that of the outer peripheral piece. The manufacturing method comprises the steps of filling thermosetting synthetic resin having bonding force with respect to metals into the openings of inner crowns at both terminal ends of the expander-spacer, and thereafter, setting the thus filled thermosetting synthetic resin so that the resin is fixedly secured to the openings of the inner crowns at both terminal ends of the expander-spacer. The resin is preferably fixed by irradiating ultraviolet rays thereto.

    • The invention relates to a process for forming a part including a bore with a bearing integrally cast thereto, the thus formed part and apparatus for thus forming the part. The process includes hot machining a bore into a billet in a non-oxidizing atmosphere and introducing molten bearing material, e.g., molten bronze about a mandrel positioned in the bore while maintaining the billet, the mandrel and the bearing material in the non-oxidizing atmosphere. The mandrel is drawn from the bore while the bearing material is cooled by cooling and solidifying means therein adjacent an end of the mandrel which is last to exit the bore. The cooling is sufficient to progressively solidify the material as the mandrel is drawn through it and out of the bore. The mandrel further preferably includes heating means therein intermediate the cooling and solidifying means and the other end thereof to maintain the material in a liquid state until the cooling and solidifying means passes there adjacent as the mandrel is drawn out of the bore.
