    • An apparatus for hindering the collection of dust and particulate matter within unutilized housings or ports of hardware component chassis is provided. A port filler baffle for occupying a port within a chassis includes a panel assembly sized and dimensioned to fit within the port of the chassis. A bracket couples with the panel assembly. An aperture filler couples with the bracket. The aperture filler is disposed to hinder particulate intrusion into the unutilized port of the chassis. When the panel assembly is mounted in the chassis, the aperture filler presses against the unutilized port, substantially blocking access to the inside of the port, thus hindering particulate intrusion and keeping the port clean.

    • A modular air flow distribution system that provides directional control of cooling air intake and exiting exhaust air for computer housings and circuit board chassis. The system comprising at least one air flow distribution module that is configured to intake cooling air from a first direction, and exit cooling air in a second, different direction which may be substantially perpendicular or orthogonal to the first direction. Each air flow distribution module includes an air intake adjacent a front edge, air exits adjacent a side edge, and one or more internal air directing channel positioned within the module to direct air from the intake towards the exit ports. The air flow distribution modules are configured to fit adjacent circuit boards within a multi-board chassis such that the air exiting each module passes over a circuit board to provide cooling thereto.

    • A platform for holding a plurality of modules or printed circuit boards wherein the platform or chassis contains shutters placed over airflow openings in the platform. The shutters are normally closed and are opened be the act of inserting a module into the platform. The shutters are in the closed position in all slots not occupied by a module and are in the open state in all slots populated by a module. The shutters open as the module is inserted and close when the module is removed. The closed shutters prevent airflow from passing through the unpopulated slots and empty space within the platform, thus forcing the airflow to pass through the space in which the modules are present. The platform also comprises a means of controlling the number of fans that are operational in accordance with the number of modules installed in the platform. The fans closest to the modules inserted into the platform are operational while fans close to unpopulated slots are turned off. A switch or electrical contacts in the rear of the modules can be used to control the operation of the fans. In an alternative embodiment. the lower and/or the upper portion of the chassis comprises one or more one time twist off tabs for each slot that extend from the front to the rear of the platform. The twist off tabs for a slot are left intact for a slot not to be populated with modules. The tabs are removed for slots to be populated with a module.

    • The present invention provides an improved cardcage design. The improvements result from the formation of an integral cardcage side using a construction method involving precision punched sheet aluminum that is precision formed into final configuration. The integral cardcage side design provides ease of assembly for the cardcage while enhancing structural integrity, improves the alignment of circuit cards within the cardcage to the backplane, increases the airflow channels between the card guides, and adapts to incorporate additional features for airflow control. The manufacturability of the cardcage is greatly simplified by reducing the number of parts requiring assembly and by the use of simple and inexpensive tools and assembly techniques.
