    • Provided are an end-of-life protection circuit for a non-isolated electronic ballast and a method for protecting same. The non-isolated electronic ballast includes a driver circuit (104), a sampling circuit (108), and a control circuit (102). The driver circuit (104) connects to an output circuit (106) for controlling operation of a load. The sampling circuit (108) samples direct current (DC) voltage values of a capacitor of a lamp coupled to the ballast to detect occurrence of an asymmetric event. The control circuit (102) receives a voltage value in response to detecting the asymmetric event and outputs to the driver circuit (104) a control signal to control operation of the driver circuit (104) to prevent end-of-life damage. Provided also are an end-of-life protection circuit for an isolated electronic ballast and a method for protecting same.

    • A driving apparatus for a fluorescent tube and a method thereof and an illumination apparatus using the same are provided. The driving apparatus stops providing power, when a fluorescent tube has broken, to both ends of the broken fluorescent tube regardless of whether a power switch related to the fluorescent tube is in ON or OFF state, and thus making sure that a person is under a safety condition without getting an electric shock during replacing the broken fluorescent tube; moreover, the driving apparatus automatically detects the newly installed fluorescent tube and automatically light up the newly installed fluorescent tube after the broken fluorescent tube is replaced and it is unnecessary to switch the power switch related to the fluorescent tube anymore, and thus avoiding a potentially hazard for the person who climbs up and down a ladder repeatedly.

    • An emergency ballast for a fluorescent lamp includes a rechargeable battery. The emergency ballast also includes a circuit for receiving an electrical voltage and providing a recommended charging voltage to the battery. The electrical voltage is one of two amplitudes, and the circuit provides a charge to the battery without regard to the amplitude of the electrical voltage. The first amplitude of the electrical voltage can be 120 volts, and the second amplitude can be 277 volts. The emergency ballast includes a capacitor electrically coupled to the circuit that provides an additional voltage to the rechargeable battery when the electrical current is 120 volts. The emergency ballast also includes a switch for electrically decoupling the capacitor from the circuit when the electrical current is 277 volts.

    • A method for use in a lamp ballast includes obtaining a measurement signal representative of a voltage at an output of a half-bridge circuit. The half-bridge circuit includes first and second semiconductor switching elements, a resonant circuit connected to the half-bridge circuit, and a snubber capacitance connected in parallel with one of the semiconductor switching elements. The method also includes providing a comparison sinal by comparing heeasurem ment signal with a reference value. The method further includes detecting one of a first type of non-zero-voltage switching operation and a second type of non-zero-voltage switching operation based on evaluations of the comparison signal, wherein the evaluations of the comparison signal occurs in each case before the first semiconductor element is switched on and in each case before the second semiconductor element is switched on.
