    • A method and apparatus are provided to retrofit a gas discharge lamp ballast designed for use with a first lamp having a first power rating to be used with a second lamp having a second power rating. The ballast has a core, a coil and a serially-connected ballast capacitance device and is characterized by a first net impedance of the ballast reactance to allow operation of the first lamp in an operating range in which the first lamp is designed to operate. When the first lamp is replaced with a second lamp having a different lamp impedance than the first lamp, the capacitance of the ballast capacitance device is selected so as to change the first net impedance of the ballast to a second net impedance which allows the ballast to maintain proper operation of the second lamp in accordance with its specifications and rating.

    • A ballast circuit for a plurality of serially connected, high pressure gas discharge lamps comprises an electromagnetic ballast arrangement receptive of an input power signal, providing an output ballast voltage for driving the plurality of lamps, and providing an open circuit ballast voltage when the lamps are disconnected from the arrangement. A first ignitor circuit is connected between the ballast arrangement and the first lamp, and produces at least one ignitor pulse of high voltage and high frequency compared to the open circuit ballast voltage, to initiate starting of the first lamp. A second ignitor circuit is connected between the first lamp and a second lamp so as to be supplied with current through the first lamp. The second circuit produces at least one ignitor pulse of high voltage and high frequency compared to the open circuit ballast voltage after the first lamp begins to start and drops substantially in impedance, to initiate starting of the second lamp.

    • An apparatus and method for supplying emergency power to a lighting device, in particular, an HID lamp, when a failure occurs in a main power supply. The apparatus can include a rectifier circuit for converting an AC voltage signal provided by the main power supply to a DC voltage signal. A capacitive element can be coupled across the DC output terminals of the rectifier circuit and across a DC coil of a DC relay circuit. The amount of energy stored by the capacitor controls the DC relay to provide the voltage of the main power supply to the lamp circuit under normal conditions, and the voltage of an emergency power supply to the lamp circuit when the voltage of the main power supply falls below a predetermined level. Alternatively, an AC relay can be coupled directly to the main AC voltage power supply or emergency power supply and configured to perform a similar operation.

    • The invention relates to a method for the independent control of individual or a group of fluorescent lamps of a lighting system operated by the a.c. supply system with the main functions of rapid start, brightness control (dimming), extinction and storage of an operating state for switching on the system after it has been switched off. A feature of the invention resides in the possibility of converting existing conventional lighting systems without additional installation costs merely by exchanging the respective conventional starter for a control circuit according to the invention and by exchanging the conventional light switch for transducers according to the invention. To achieve this, a control element instead of the known starter is connected into the heating circuit for a lamp formed from a series circuit of a fluorescent tube with a ballast device. The control element consists at least of the components of power switch, phase detector, power supply, signal processor, clock generation means and control software deposited in the non-volatile memory and generating the control signals of the power switch among other things from the information of the phase detector.

    • Included in a ballast circuit arrangement for a gas discharge lamp is a ballast transformer arrangement receptive of an input power signal and providing an output, ballast voltage. Further included is a pulse transformer having a secondary winding in serial circuit with the lamp for impressing a high voltage, hot restrike starting pulse across the lamp. A bypass capacitor is coupled to the ballast transformer for being charged by the ballast voltage. A hot restrike starting circuit for pulsing a primary winding of the pulse transformer comprises a serially connected starting capacitor and resistor coupled across the bypass capacitor; and a circuit for discharging the starting capacitor including, in serial circuit, the primary winding of the pulse transformer and a current switch having a control electrode responsive to a control signal. A trigger circuit for supplying such control signal comprises a serially connected trigger capacitor and resistor coupled across the starting capacitor; a circuit for discharging the trigger capacitor including a first voltage-breakover switch and producing the mentioned control signal when the first voltage-breakover switch becomes conductive; and a second voltage-breakover switch in serial circuit with the trigger resistor, between the trigger and starting capacitors. The foregoing arrangement provides multiple, consistently high, hot restrike pulses for restarting the lamp.

    • A lighting system using a 120 volt AC power source and including within a single enclosure a low wattage fluorescent lamp and a low wattage incandescent lamp. The fluorescent lamp provides an efficient light source operating at a low voltage and low wattage, but providing a relatively bright light. The incandescent lamp may be used to provide a more traditional night light having a lower light output than that which is produced by the flourescent lamp. Either the fluorescent lamp or the incandescent lamp is selected by a switch. To obtain the low voltage required by the incandescent lamp, a resistor is placed in parallel with a capacitor to provide a small voltage drop, e.g., from 120 volts to 115 volts. In this configuration, due to the charging and discharging of the capacitor as the current alternates and discharges through the resistance of the incandescent lamp, a relatively low voltage and current pass through the incandescent lamp.
