摘要： Propagation delay compensation in a wireless network comprising a central access point and multiple subscriber terminals is achieved by defining a registration time slot in which new subscriber terminals must first transmit network registration signals to the access point. The subscriber terminals by default transmit at the start of the time slot, and the access point times the delay from the start of the slot to the receipt of the subscriber terminal registration request, and then transmits this information back to the subscriber terminal. In all subsequent transmissions the subscriber terminal uses this information to delay its transmissions to compensate for differences in signal propagation delay between each subscriber terminal.

摘要： In a time division multiple access wireless communication system, a wireless radio station performs a timing error compensation method. The wireless radio station receives messages including a synchronisation pattern. The wireless radio station adopts a power down mode between reception of messages, and accumulates a timing error representing an accumulated difference between expected times of arrival of the synchronisation patterns and actual times of arrival of the synchronisation patterns, during a predetermined time interval between reception of successive messages and before an expected reception of a next message. Thereafter, the wireless radio station at least substantially undoes the accumulated timing error, before the expected reception of the next message such that the timing error is compensated before the expected reception of the next message.

摘要： A system for time division multiplexed communication over a single frequency band in which guard time overhead is reduced by active adjustment of reverse link transmission timing as a function of round trip propagation time. In one embodiment, during a first portion of a time frame, a base station issues a single burst segmented into time slots comprising data directed to each user station. After a single collective guard time, the user stations respond, one by one, in allocated time slots on the same frequency as the base station, with only minimal guard times between each reception. In order to prevent interference among the user transmissions, the base station measures the round trip propagation time for each user station and commands the user stations to advance or retard their transmission timing as necessary. To establish the initial range of a new user station, a short message is sent by the new user station during the collective guard portion (or, alternatively, during an available time slot), from which the base station calculates the propagation delay and hence the distance of the user station. Messages sent from the base station to the user stations may be interleaved so as to reduce the effects of potential noise or interference.

The receiver includes circuitry for receiving a spread spectrum signal from a base station and for recovering a network clock signal therefrom, a low frequency oscillator for producing an oscillator clock signal, and a frequency comparator that takes as inputs the network clock signal and the oscillator clock signal and produces a calibration factor based on the difference between the clock signals. A controller coupled to the low frequency oscillator amd the frequency comparator utilizes the calibration factor together with the low frequency oscillator clock signal to output a accurate and precision timed signal thereby being able to accurately require the timing of the paging channel.

A subscriber unit responds with a data packet (a) sufficiently short to ensure correct reception by the base irrespective of transmission time. The base determines the transmission time taken and instructs the subscriber unit to advance its timings so that longer data packets (b) can be sent so as to be received when expected. The timing adjustment includes both a fixed present component dependent on approximate separation of base station and subscriber unit, and a second component from measurement of the transmission time taken.
