    • The present invention relates to a loudspeaker device, comprising first and second closely located and individually acoustically isolated loudspeaker elements. The first and second elements are arranged to receive a first signal and a second signal, respectively, at least part of said first signal being in anti-phase relative to said second signal. The device further includes third and fourth loudspeaker elements, being located in close proximity to said first and second loudspeaker elements, respectively. The centre of said third loudspeaker element is located such that a first axis intersecting the centre of said first loudspeaker element and the centre of said third loudspeaker element is inclined an angle φ relative to a horizontal plane, φ being in the range 0°-+30°, and the centre of said fourth loudspeaker element is located such that a second axis intersecting the centre of said second loudspeaker element and the centre of said fourth loudspeaker element is inclined at an angle cp relative to a horizontal plane, φ being 0°-±30°. The first and second signals to said third and fourth loudspeaker elements, respectively, are low-pass filtered, the cut-off frequency of said low-pass filters being less than or equal to 2.5 kHz.

    • A system for customising the synthesis and generation of spatial hearing in virtual auditory space (VAS) for individual listeners includes a measuring ruler (12) and a digital processing unit (DPU) (14) to which the ruler (12) is connected. The ruler (12) is used for measuring various physical dimensions of the morphology of a person's external auditory periphery (16). The ruler (12) comprises a base (18) insertable into an ear canal (20) of the person's ear. A robotic measuring arm (22) extends from the base (18) and has a measuring tip (24) to enable the ruler (12) to record the Cartesian (x,y,z) coordinates of the tip (24) relative to the base (18). By suitable manipulation of the robotic arm (22), the tip (24) can be positioned at desired locations on the person's external auditory periphery (16) to enable the morphological measurements of the person's external auditory periphery (16) to be effected. The ruler (12) is electrically connected via a lead (26) to the DPU (14) which is programmed to compute either head related transfer function (HRTF) filter coefficients or HRTF spectral weights. Functional relationships may thus be used to generate, by means of the DPU (28), HRTFs at any location for any individual listener given an encoding of the individual listener's morphological measurements.

    • The invention concerns sound spatialization with multichannel encoding for binaural reproduction on two loudspeakers, the spatial encoding being defined by encoding functions associated with multiple encoding channels and the decoding by applying filters for binaural reproduction. The invention provides for an optimization as follows: a) obtaining a original set of acoustic transfer functions particular to an individual's morphology (HRIR;HRTF), b) selecting spatial encoding functions (g(θ,φ,n)) and/or decoding filters (F(t,n)), and c) through successive iterations, optimizing the filters associated with the selected encoding functions or the encoding functions associated with the selected filters, or jointly the selected filters and encoding functions, by minimizing an error (c(HRIR,HRIR*)) calculated based on a comparison between: the original set of transfer functions (HRIR), and a set of reconstructed transfer functions (HRIR*) from encoding functions and decoding filters, whether optimized and/or selected.

    • A wireless communication system based on a directional speaker is disclosed. The system can include an interface unit and a base unit. The audio signals from the speaker can be generated by transforming ultrasonic signals in air. This allows the production of directional audio signals even when the aperture of the speaker has dimensions in the order of a few centimeters. The audio signals from the speaker can be heard hands-free. Further, privacy protection is enhanced. In one embodiment, the interface unit can be attached or integrated to a piece of clothing at the shoulder of the user, with the audio signals from the speaker directed towards one of the user's ears. The wireless communication system can be applied to a number of different areas, including a communication device, such as a cell phone; a hearing aid; an entertainment system; and a computation system, such as a personal digital assistant or a computer. The wireless communication system can be personalized to the hearing characteristics of the user, or to the ambient noise level of the environment.
