    • A pixel interpolation process is based on detection of a potential edge in proximity to a pixel being estimated, and the angle thereof. The potential edge and its angle is determined based on filtering of offset or overlapping sets of lines from a pixel window centered around the pixel being estimated and then cross-correlating the filter results. The highest value in the correlation result values represents a potential edge in proximity to the pixel being estimated and the index of the highest value represents the angle of the potential edge. This information is used in conjunction with other information from the cross-correlation and analysis of the differences between pixels in proximity to verify the validity of the potential edge. If determined to be valid, a diagonal interpolation based on the edge and its angle is used to estimate the pixel value of the pixel. Otherwise, an alternate interpolation process, such as vertical interpolation, is used to estimate the pixel value for the pixel.

    • One embodiment of an edge-preserving vertical interpolation system constructs a de-interlaced video frame on a pixel-by-pixel basis using an edge-preserving vertical interpolation technique. Pixels within a pixel window centered about a selected pixel determine the direction of an intensity gradient associated with the selected pixel. A first pixel is constructed by interpolating between pixels that are perpendicular to the direction of the intensity gradient and a confidence factor is computed that indicates the likelihood that there is only one edge within the pixel window. A second pixel is constructed using a non-edge-preserving vertical interpolation technique. Interpolating between the first pixel and the second pixel based on the confidence factor generates a pixel in the de-interlaced video frame corresponding to the selected pixel. Unlike prior art techniques, the present invention does not attempt to correlate between pixel features and is therefore more robust to noisy pixel data than prior art techniques.

    • According to one embodiment, an edge detection module detects edges in a frame of a moving picture signal in accordance with an edge determination reference value. A resolution conversion module converts a resolution of the frame from a first resolution to a second resolution, thereby generating a provisional high-resolution image. A corresponding pixel point detection module detects corresponding pixels in the provisional high-resolution image, which correspond to each of the detected edges. An image quality enhancement process module executes an image quality enhancement process for sharpening for each of the detected corresponding pixels in the provisional high-resolution image. A control module varies the edge determination reference value based on the detected edge number and a maximum edge number at which an information processing apparatus is able to complete the resolution-enhancing process for one frame within a target process time.
