    • An apparatus, e.g. an optical receiver, includes an optical front end and a processor. The optical front end is configured to coherently receive an input optical signal and convert the input optical signal to a digital-electrical data stream. The processor is configured to recover a data stream from the digital-electrical data stream. The processor is further configured to compare a correlation pattern of the recovered data stream with a pre-determined correlation pattern. The processor is further configured to determine, from the comparison, coefficients of a filter configured to recover data encoded on the input digital-electrical data stream.

    • An optical receiver having an optical IQ modulator configured to generate an optical local-oscillator (OLO) signal for optical homodyne detection of an optical input signal applied to the optical receiver. The optical receiver further has (i) a phase detector configured to generate an electrical measure of the phase difference between the OLO signal and a carrier wave of the optical input signal and (ii) a phase-lock loop configured to drive the optical IQ modulator using the electrical measure. In an embodiment, the phase detector is configured to generate the electrical measure using both I and Q components of the homodyne-detected signal and in a manner that enables the optical receiver to be compatible with the M-QAM modulation format.

    • A method for processing data in an optical network element are provided, wherein the optical network element comprises a local oscillator operating at a first frequency; wherein an incoming data stream is received at a second frequency; wherein the incoming data steam is processed using the first frequency; wherein a first pattern is searched in the incoming data stream; wherein a second pattern is searched in the incoming data stream; and wherein the first pattern corresponds to the first frequency being in the spectrum on one side of the second frequency and the second pattern corresponds to the first frequency being in the spectrum on the other side of the second frequency.     • A signal processing method, an optical receiver and optical network system is provided. The method includes: receiving a first optical signal sent by an optical network unit, generating a second optical signal and modulating a phase of the second optical signal, obtaining at least one path of electrical signals after the first optical signal and the second optical signal separately undergo polarization splitting, frequency mixing, and optical-electrical conversion, outputting a third electrical signal after performing operation processing on the at least one path of electrical signals, and restoring a data signal according to the third electrical signal and performing sending. The embodiments example benefits are greatly reducing complexity of system implementation and maximally reducing a system upgrade cost and an optical power loss.
