    • A transition joint for sealing an electrical coaxial cable having an oil-impregnated or fluid filled layer. The transition joint has two primary elements, an electrically insulative elastomeric tube and a heat recoverable sleeve. In connecting a paper-insulated, lead jacketed cable to an extruded dielectric cable, the elastomeric tube is placed in tight conformity around the paper layer, slightly overlapping the lead jacket and the central conductor, and further partially overlapping a connector joining the conductors of the cables. The heat recoverable sleeve is then contracted over the elastomeric tube, overlapping the lead jacket and the central conductor, and partially overlapping the connector. The heat recoverable sleeve mechanically restricts the elastomeric tube, preventing the elastomeric tube from swelling which, in turn, precludes absorption of the oil, which would otherwise cause the elastomer to degrade. A flexible tape may be substituted for the heat recoverable sleeve to provide the mechanical confining pressure. If the cable has an additional semiconducting layer, a high-dielectric tape may be used for dielectric stress control.

    • A way to evacuate all moisture and air and then pressurize with SF.sub.6 gas, a cable and conduit system used for electrical power distribution and transmission lines, by fabricating a termination at each end. A termination is made up of a first end plate with a hole slightly larger than the conduit and sealed around the hole to the conduit. For a single phase cable, one electrical terminal is sealed as it goes through the first end plate and is connected to the neutral conductor. A second electrical terminal is sealed as it goes through a second end plate and is connected to the conductor. An enlarged conduit is spaced between these two end plates and is sealed to, the two end plates. A tire valve is installed in one end plate. A hole to fit a pipe nipple is made at the top of the enlarged conduit of one termination. A vacuum pump is connected to a pipe nipple screwed into the hole and the termination evacuated. SF.sub.6 gas is then let in through the tire valve until a pressure of 1 psig is reached, then shut off. The vacuum pump and nipple are removed, then a patch is sealed over the hole. SF.sub.6 gas is now let in to pressurize at 20-80 psig. Various numbers, sizes and kinds of conductors can be used in a conduit to make various kinds of high voltage power cables.

    • A stop or through joint for high voltage, oil filled electric cables having a central conductor with an oil duct, insulation around the cable conductor and a sheath around the insulation which is slightly spaced, at least in part, from the insulation. The bared conductor ends are electrically joined and are surrounded by insulation which does not have a deliberately added oil channel for supplying oil to the duct. The joint is surrounded by a conductive casing, and within the casing, the cable insulation and the space between the insulation and the sheath has oil under pressure supplied thereto so that with variations of the operating conditions which cause oil flow in the cables, oil flows through the cable insulation so as to maintain the necessary oil content of the cables. Also, a cable system with a plurality of such joints intermediate the terminal ends of the cable system.

    • An oil filled cable is divided into separate hydraulic chambers by a stop joint to prevent excess leakage from cable portions adjacent a fault. A separating flange between sections has tight fitting passageways for the insulated wire conductors to permit slight flow between chambers and prevent large leaks. Normally the joint is bypassed by external valves which apply equalized oil pressure to each section. Occurrence of low pressure from a leak causes the valves to close and separates the sections while limiting leakage from the adjacent section until the faulty section is repaired. The construction permits a reduction in the usual number of completely separate stop joints which require additional electrical joint connections.
