    • A method is proposed for preventing so-called halo-blocked apertures in color picture tubes. The halo-blocked apertures are caused by insulative negatively-charged particles attached to the inside surface of the shadow mask which deflect the transmitting portions of an electron beam. The method comprises depositing a conductive primary metal film on the insulative particle to render the particle conductive so that the particle cannot deflect the beam. This conductive film is applied during the initial tube processing after the tube has been agitated and oriented so as to dispose any loose insulative particles within the tube to a location where the conductive primary metal film can be deposited thereon, and prior to the step of depositing a getter material.

    • One of the process steps in the manufacturing process of shadow masks (13) for color display tubes (1) is blackening. In this process step, the shadow mask (13) is heated for example to a temperature of at least 600null C. in a furnace in a gentle oxidative atmosphere of a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Under these conditions the shadow mask (13) is covered with a layer of Fe3O4, also referred to as nullblack rustnull. After this the shadow mask (13) is cooled down. The invention describes a new blackening process which has a much higher cooling rate than usual. In the present-day process, a cooling rate of 50null C./min (21) is used; this invention discloses a cooling rate of at least 500null C./min (22) or even more. This results in an improvement by at least 20% of the thermal expansion coefficient, leading to a color display tube (1) with a shadow mask (13) having a higher mechanical stability and hence to an increased picture performance.

    • The present invention has an object to provide a method of manufacturing an electronic tube capable of eliminating deterioration of image quality due to an excessively high electron reflection effect of a material comprising a metal element with an atomic number not lower than 70 and painted on a shadow mask and deterioration of image quality due to spontaneous peeling of a coat on the surface of the shadow mask. A paint mainly comprising a solated metal oxide or a metal alkoxide of an element with an atomic number not lower than 40 is painted to form an electron reflection coat with an amount of coating of less than 2 mg/cm2 so as to achieve coating on an electron gun side surface of a shadow mask. With this method, an electronic tube with good image quality can be manufactured.
