    • A fuse comprises a housing formed of synthetic resin, and the housing including a peripheral wall having an upper opening, a fuse-element, which is melted by an excessive electrical current flowing therethrough, fixedly disposed in the housing and at least an air passage communicating between the inside and outside of the housing and formed on the wall portion of the housing. A heated air in the housing heated by heat generated in the fuse-element is discharged from the air passage, thereby it is prevented that the inside of the housing becomes high-temperature.

    • An enclosing structure for an electric fuse having a fusible element disposed within a tubular casing of insulating material and interconnected at its ends with terminals mounted on the casing ends comprises an elongated tubular enclosure formed of insulating and semiconducting material and disposed about the fuse with its inner surface in heat transferring surface contacting relation therewith and a rigid metallic heat absorbing sleeve imbedded in the elongated enclosure to absorb heat therefrom and to impart a degree of mechanical strength thereto. Semiconducting sleeves which form parts of the tubular enclosure include an outer sheath which is grounded and inner sleeve elements arranged so as to isolate the fuse and the contacts of the fuse enclosing structure thereby to inhibit corona discharge from the conducting parts.

    • A current-limiting, single-element, dual-function, electric fuse has a fusible element with at least one "weak spot" of very small cross section; and the temperature of that weak spot will exceed eighty percent of the melting temperature of the material of that fusible element when that electric fuse operates at its maximum continuous current carrying capacity. An appreciable amount of the heat, which the weak spot generates in response to a low but potentially-harmful overload, will be conducted to the inner surface of the housing for the electric fuse by the arc-quenching filler; and a substantial percent of that conducted heat will pass to, and be radiated by, the exposed outer surface of that housing. The conduction of heat to the inner surface of the housing is fostered by locating the weak spot closer to that inner surface than to either terminal of the electric fuse; and the passing of that heat to the exposed outer surface of that housing is fostered by making that housing of a material which has a thermal conductivity in excess of thirty thousandths of a calorie per square centimeter of cross section per centimeter of length per second of time per degree centigrade.

    • In an electrical fuse cartridge having a hollow insulating body enclosing the fusible element or elements and carrying the terminal heads of the cartridge, the said body is formed of a tubular mass of an insulating material in which a tube is embedded for circulation of a cooling fluid. The tube is preferably of non-metallic nature and it is coiled helically about the axis of the body. In a preferred embodiment the tubular mass is obtained by winding on a mandrel glass threads or ribbons impregnated with a uncured synthetic resin so as to form an inner layer on which the cooling tube may be coiled, then an intermediate layer which fills the helical space which separates the successive turns of the coiled tube, and an outer layer covering the intermediate layer and the tube, the unit thus obtained being thereafter treated to cure the resin in the three layers and to thus obtain a rigid one-piece body with the cooling tube embedded therein.
