    • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for deleting objects from a memory in a computing device, wherein the memory includes both a volatile memory and a non-volatile memory that is writeable. During operation, the system receives a request to perform an object deletion operation, which locates and deletes unused objects from the memory. In response to this request, the system performs the object deletion operation by first performing a marking operation that marks objects that are reachable in the non-volatile memory. This marking operation does not directly mark the objects in the non-volatile memory, but instead marks data values in the volatile memory that are associated with the objects. In this way, unnecessary write operations to non-volatile memory are avoided. Next, the system performs a sweep operation that deletes unmarked objects from the non-volatile memory.

    • When an operation relating to print processing is to be instructed, a user information producing section produces an identification of a user and transmits the operation in a user name to which the identification is attached. A correctness inquiry judging section judges whether it is necessary to verify correctness of the identification, in accordance with a security policy stored in a support authentication level storing section. If necessary, a user verifying section is requested to verify the correctness. The user verifying section performs user verification corresponding to an authentication level. In a high level, reverification of the identification is performed by an authenticating section. In a middle level, user authentication based on an authentication scheme of the client environment is used. In a low level, the system believes the user name designated by the user. An operation controlling section judges whether the operation is allowed to the verified user.

    • An IC card comprises, a memory including a system area for storing system information, and a user area for storing user information, a CPU for controlling information read/write access of the memory, and a memory for storing program data for determining an operation of the CPU. The CPU stores predetermined data in the user area on the basis of a first command obtained from an external device, and compares the predetermined data with another predetermined data stored in the user area on the basis of a second command obtained from the external device. The CPU detects an abnormality of one of the memory, and data and address lines of the memory according to the result of comparison.
