    • The disclosed embodiments provide a system that archives data for a distributed filesystem. Two or more cloud controllers collectively manage distributed filesystem data that is stored in one or more cloud storage systems; the cloud controllers cache and ensure data consistency for the stored data. During operation, a cloud controller determines that a cloud file in a previously stored data snapshot is no longer being actively referenced in the distributed filesystem. The cloud controller transfers this cloud file from the (first) cloud storage system to an archival cloud storage system, thereby reducing storage costs while preserving the data in the cloud file in case it is ever needed again.

    • A failure resilient distributed replicated data storage system is described herein. The storage system includes zones that are independent, and autonomous from each other. The zones include nodes that are independent and autonomous. The nodes include storage devices. When a data item is stored, it is partitioned into a plurality of data objects and a plurality of parity objects calculated. Reassembly instructions are created for the data item. The data objects and parity objects are spread across all nodes and zones in the storage system. Reassembly instructions are also spread across the zones. When a read request is received, the data item is prepared from the lowest latency nodes according to the reassembly instructions. This provides for data resiliency while keeping the amount of storage space required relatively low.

    • A file server is coupled to a plurality of user terminals and a remote file server. The file server, stores, in a storage device, data of files received from the plurality of user terminals, replicates the files to the remote file server, stubs the files stored in the storage device, and, upon receiving an access request from the user terminal, reads out data of the file from the storage device and transmits the data to the user terminal if a file related to the access request is not stubbed, and, recall data of the file from the remote file server and transmits data of the file to the user terminal if a file related to the access request is stubbed. The file server replicates, to the remote file server, data of a user who performs a session disconnection request to the file server within a certain time in preference to another user.

    • A distributed storage system has a plurality of instances. A computer system simulates the state of the distributed storage system. The system obtains a current state of the distributed storage system and replication policies for objects in the distributed storage system. Each replication policy specifies criteria for placing copies of the relevant objects among the plurality of instances. The system receives proposed modifications to the state of the distributed storage system and simulates the state of the distributed storage system over time based on the current state of the distributed storage system, current statistical trends in the state of the distributed storage system, the replication policies for the objects in the distributed storage system, and the proposed modifications to the state of the distributed storage system. One or more reports are generated relating to time evolution of the state of the distributed storage system based on the simulation.
