    • Method and apparatus for generating an equipment reply signal for the automatic identification of objects and/or living beings, including a stationary interrogator having an energy transmitter, a receiver, an evaluator connected to the receiver, an opening code generator, and a first modulator connected to the energy transmitter, and a transponder fastened to the object or living being having a circuit unit with an energy receiver and converter, a code memory, a clock generator, a code transmitter, at least one antenna, an opening code receiver, an opening code memory, an opening code comparator connected to the opening code memory and the opening code receiver, a demodulator connected to the energy receiver and converter, and a second modulator connected to the demodulator, code transmitter, opening code transmitter and code memory, which includes radiating an opening code in the interrogator, storing the opening code in the transponder, radiating a code stored in the code memory by the code transmitter if the stored and radiated opening codes coincide, modulating a reply carrier signal on an energy wave with the first modulator, separating the reply carrier signal from the energy wave with the demodulator, modulating the reply signal carrier with the code with the second modulator, and radiating the modulated reply carrier signal as the reply signal with the code transmitter.

    • An apparatus for synchronized signal reception wherein a first signal of frequency f.sub.o is transmitted by a first unit and is reflected by a second unit, which thus transmits the reflected second signal. The reflected signal is modulated by information which is supplied by a coding device 27 in said second unit, which coding device generates a coded pulse train 27p in the form consisting of pulses, i.e. information symbols. A pulse generator 28 is controlled by the pulse train to emit a signal with one of two frequencies k.sub.1 and k.sub.2, respectively, in dependence upon the binary state of the pulse train. The signal is divided in a frequency divider 29 to provide frequencies k.sub.1 /n and k.sub.2 /n, respectively, which are supplied to the coding device 27, causing the coding device to emit said pulses with lengths which are related to the cycle lengths of frequencies k.sub.1 /n and k.sub.2 /n, respectively. The signal generated in the pulse generator 28 with the frequencies k.sub.1 and k.sub.2, is applied as a modulating signal to the modulator 26, which generates a single sideband with the alternating frequencies f.sub.o +k.sub.1 and f.sub.o +k.sub.2, respectively, constituting said second signal. The receiver 23 of the first unit receives the reflected second signal and scans said information symbols by means of the duration of the signal in dependence of the frequency of the signal.

    • An automatic vehicle identification system for use in identifying and routing vehicles, such as railway cars or other vehicles which routinely travel a given track or path. A passive electronic device or electrical circuit is employed to intersect an energy field and respond thereto by generating a code in accordance with energy received and converted to coded electrical signals. Connected to the passive device is a short wave transmitter for transmitting signals generated by the electrical device when so energized. The electrical device may also comprise a plurality of different induction coils or antenna which serve to modify an energy field in a given manner, which modification may be detected by short wave sensing and converted to a coded electrical signal which is employed to identify the vehicle. In another form, a coded array of antenna or induction coils, is provided which modify energy fields generated at check points or scanning locations along a trackway or roadway, wherein such energy field modifications are sensed at each such scanning location, resulting in the generation of an electrical code at each location and identification of the vehicle.

    • An interrogation system in which comparison circuits determine lead or lag of an interrogation code in the answering apparatus, i.e., transponder, and provide a compensating correction. The system employs time dependent differing interrogation codes which are successively transmitted from an interrogation apparatus to one or more answering apparatuses. Time dependent differing answer codes, logically related to the interrogation codes, are employed to indicate a friendly answer. The answer codes are generated and stored as past, present and future time codes. Lead or lag of the clock of the answering apparatus with respect to the interrogation apparatus is determined by a comparison of stored and received interrogation codes so that a resetting of the code program and/or an adjustment of the clock can be performed to achieve synchronism.
