摘要： A dryer system for drying a coating applied to a substrate includes a thermally conductive roll having a length and a peripheral surface for supporting the substrate, and a plurality of energy emitters disposed within the conductive roll along the length of the conductive roll. The plurality of energy emitters are controlled to selectively emit energy along the length of the conductive roll. The conductive roll is at least partially surrounded by at least one convection unit. The convection unit includes a blower assembly, a heater assembly and a vacuum passageway. The blower assembly includes an inlet and directs a current of air towards the substrate. The heater assembly heats the air being directed towards the substrate. The vacuum passageway extends between the substrate and the inlet of the blower assembly for returning the heated air to the blower assembly once the air has impinged upon the substrate.

The web of paper has opposing planar surfaces, and at least one such boundary control roll is positioned in transverse non-contacting proximity to a planar surface of said web and rotated counter to the direction of travel of the web. If multiple rolls are used, the rolls on opposing sides of the web should be coacting and counter-rotating. The boundary layer formed about the peripheral surface of each roll is adjustably positioned within the boundary layer on adhering to the moving web. By colliding the respective boundary layers, a zone of interference is created and the boundary layer of the web is significantly reduced in thickness. In this manner, the thickness of the hot solvent-laden boundary layer adhering to each side of the web is effectively reduced.

The inner portion of each head, i.e., adjacent to a journal, is formed integral with the journal. The outer portion of each head serves to connect the inner head portion to the dryer shell. The radial dimensions of the inner and outer portions are adjusted so as to provide a minimum level of stress at the joint between the inner and outer head portions. The rotary pressure vessel also includes a brace, in the form of a cylindrical shell, arranged between the pair of outer head portions. The size of the brace is selected so that it may be fabricated from standard flanges and pipe or rolled plate and at the same time relieves the shell of projected end loads.
