    • A flash freezer and process is described in which a freezer cabinet is configured to be positioned within the refrigerated air compartment of a primary freezer. An internal flash freeze compartment is located within the cabinet next to a plenum which is separated from the flash freeze compartment by a bulkhead. A plurality of first air passage apertures is formed through the bulkhead to permit passage of air between the flash freeze compartment and the plenum. A plurality of second air passage apertures is formed through a cabinet wall opposite to the bulkhead. The air passage apertures are arranged to control passage of refrigerated air under pressure from the refrigerated air compartment to direct a uniform pressurized airflow through the flash freeze compartment and over the articles placed therein.

    • There is a cooling system and method for its use that cools carcasses prior to their being placed into cold storage units, such as refrigeration units or freezers. The cooling system includes cooling units having a wall therein, to redirect airflow in a circular pathway from a first side of the wall to a second side of the wall. The cooling unit includes at least one cooling apparatus positioned proximate the first side of wall, for directing airflow of cooled air produced in the cooling apparatus, vertically downward in a direction toward the floor, and over the animal carcass. The wall is above the floor, such that this cooled air moves from the first side of the wall to the second side of the wall, and completes the circular pathway by returning to the area proximate to the cooling apparatus. An apparatus for creating condensation can be placed on the second side of the wall, such that condensation falls to the floor, and not into contact with the animal carcasses.

    • A bimodal refrigeration system for use in refrigerated transport containers or refrigerated warehouses. The present invention includes a refrigerated container having an enclosed cargo chamber for storing refrigerated goods and a mechanical refrigeration unit that produces a chilled forced-air current within the cargo chamber. The cargo chamber is designed to guide the forced-air current in a specified discharge and return path. In accordance with the present invention, a row of thermal storage ducts for retaining endothermic storage material are disposed within the cargo chamber. The thermal storage ducts are longitudinally disposed in parallel with the air flow direction of the specified forced-air discharge and return path to enable maximum convective thermal exchange between the forced-air current and the endothermic storage material without obstructing the specified forced-air discharge and return path.

    • An air return baffle for refrigeration trailers is characterized by a unitary panel molded from synthetic plastic material and containing integral baffles for improving air movement to the refrigeration unit of the trailer. The panel is adapted for mounting in sealed relation adjacent the front wall of the trailer and at least partially covers the refrigeration unit. The lower portion of the panel contains a plurality of openings for drawing air into the cavity defined behind the panel. Air is directed by the baffles toward the refrigeration unit, and the air movement eliminates hot and cold spots within the trailer. Vents in the panel are operable should the openings become clogged and a strap is provided to removably connect the panel with the trailer wall. Wings on the upper wall of the panel direct air from the cavity to openings in the side portions of the refrigeration unit.

    • The invention provides a method for shipping cargo, such as produce, in a typical enclosed cargo container van. The method has the following steps: (a) loading the cargo into boxes having a pair of opposed vertical side walls, a pair of opposed vertical end walls, a top wall and a bottom wall, each box having openings in at least two different walls to allow the flow of gases through the box; (b) stacking the boxes on individual pallet boards wherein each pallet board load has a height and a perimeter with a rectangular cross-section, the pallet board loads being prepared by securing the boxes in a plurality of horizontal tiers to individual pallet boards in such a way that a substantially equal number of boxes are secured to each pallet board in a regular, repeating pattern, the boxes being secured in each tier such that channels are formed within each tier and at least one of the vertical walls of each box on the tier abuts such a channel; (c) placing a horizontal baffle sheet within the pallet board loads at a preselected elevation, each baffle sheet having extensions which protrude away from the perimeter of the pallet board load; and (d) loading the pallet board loads into the container van in such a way that a substantial number of the channels defined in each tier are in fluid communication with channels of adjoining pallet board loads, so that gases flowing within the enclosed space of the container van pass freely to each box. wherein the extensions of the baffle boards substantially divide the enclosed space of the container van into a lower portion and an upper portion such that gases injected into the enclosed space near the lower end of the forward end wall and subsequently withdrawn from the enclosed space near the upper end of the forward end wall flow from the forward end wall to the rearward end wall within the lower portion and return to the forward end wall from the rearward end wall within the upper portion. The invention provides a method for shipping cargo in a container van while providing ventilation throughout the cargo. The method is extremely easy and inexpensive to initiate and requires little or no modification to container vans.

    • A method and system for conditioning the cargo containing space of a vehicle are disclosed wherein refrigerated or heated air is introduced into a supply duct and circulated through the cargo to a return duct. The return duct or ducts are preferably formed by movable reefer pallets or racks, controlled openings in the pallets regulating flow into the return duct to develop a uniform pressure differential between the cargo space and the return duct and achieve more uniform cooling. Heat barrier spacers are arranged on vertical walls to minimize heat passage to the cargo. A method and system are also disclosed for supplying refrigerated gas through a supply duct and returning it through a return duct, a control unit being normally responsive to a master temperature sensor arranged in an inlet, a sub-master temperature sensor being arranged for sensing freezing or chilling conditions and overriding the master temperature sensor.
