    • A vehicle lighting unit can be capable of illuminating pedestrians and the like present in lateral areas above a horizontal line while suppressing generation of glare to oncoming or preceding vehicles. A vehicle lighting unit can also be capable of forming both a basic light distribution pattern and an overhead light distribution pattern without invading an area for reflecting light for forming a basic light distribution pattern. The vehicle lighting unit can include a projector lens disposed on an optical axis, a light source disposed behind a rear-side focal point of the projector lens, a reflecting surface configured to reflect light emitted from the light source so that the light is directed toward the optical axis, and a shade disposed between the projector lens and the light source. The shade can be configured to shield part of light emitted from the light source and reflected by the reflecting surface.

    • A light emitting diode (LED) lighting device has a base, a hood, an LED module, a light gathering element and a lens. The base has a container having an inner bottom. The inner bottom comprises a parallel surface and a mounting surface being connected to the parallel surface at an included angle. The hood has a reflective inner surface and is mounted in the container of the base. The LED module is mounted on the mounting surface of the container in the base, is covered by the hood and emits light beams at various angles. The light gathering element is mounted on the LED module to reflect light beams not emitted directly to the inner surface of the hood to ensure a greater percentage of light is reflected by the reflective surface to increase brightness of the LED lighting device.

    • A device is provided to diffuse a beam of light, the device consisting of a plurality of truncated cells nested together along their respective sidewalls for collecting and diffusing the light rays as they extend along the plurality of cells having an expansive, tapered interior volume. The device diffuses the main light beam in a headlamp, for example, thereby substantially reducing the glare experienced by oncoming drivers and permitting high beams of the headlamp to be used in the presence of the oncoming drivers. The device of the present invention is retrofitable to existing headlamps. In another embodiment of the present invention, a concave lens is disposed in the headlamp assembly to diffuse the main light beam prior to it entering the truncated cells, while each one of the cells of the dispersion device is also provided with its own respective concave lens to augment the diffusing effect.

    • A motor vehicle headlight comprises a reflector, a bulb, a glass, and a direct light mask provided in front of the bulb and mounted on the reflector by at least one generally vertical bracket. The reflector has a reflective surface capable of generating by itself a beam whose light is distributed widthwise in a homogeneous manner, between a zero inclination and a maximum inclination.     • A headlight has a light source and a reflector. A screening device is associated with the light source and has a web located at both sides of the light source and extending along the optical axis. A light-impermeable cap forms a part of the screening device arranged under the light source. A gap-like opening remains between the upper edges and the lower edges of the webs. Above the web, light emitted by the light source and reflected from the upper region of the reflector can pass and form a low beam to produce an upper bright-dark limit by the upper edges of the webs. The light passing through the gap-like openings is reflected from the lower region of the reflector and forms an additional light beam arranged at a distance above the bright-dark limit.

    • A projection headlamp system is capable of projecting a wide spread controlled pattern of light for accommodating low and high beam illuminations. The projection headlamp system includes a curved reflector and a gas discharge lamp. The curved reflector has first and second optical focal points associated therewith positioned along an optical axis. The first focal point is within and closer to the curved reflector than the second focal point which is spaced from the reflector. The lamp is disposed within the curved reflector at the first focal point thereof and along the optical axis. The lamp is operable for generating light. The curved reflector is operable for receiving a substantial portion of the light generated by the lamp and for directing the light along the optical axis toward the second focal point thereof. An optical element such as a mask or mask-shaped mirror is positioned along the optical axis approximately at the second focal point of the reflector for creating an image of a well-defined sharp cutoff within the light from the reflector. A light projecting lens is positioned along the optical axis and spaced from the optical element at a distance approximately equal to the focal length of the lens for receiving light from the second focal point and projecting the light as a wide spread controlled pattern containing the image of the well-defined sharp cutoff to thereby provide a low beam illumination for vehicular use.

    • An antiglare vehicle headlamp has an electric lighting bulb disposed in a lighting chamber defined by a lamp body and a cover lens secured thereto. A generally concave reflector is aimably mounted in the lighting chamber for reflecting the light rays from the bulb along the optical axis of the headlamp. The bulb has a substantially tubular envelope portion of vitreous material containing a filament, and a flat base portion formed in one piece with the envelope portion. As the base portion is conventionally formed by pinch sealing, a generally tapering part of indefinite shape and wall thickness is created between the envelope portion and the base portion. The indefinitely tapering part will refract in various directions the light rays emitted by the bulb filament. Should they be subsequently reflected by the reflector, such random light rays would not travel parallel to the optical axis, and some of them, issuing upwardly from the headlamp, would cause glare. A light shade is disposed between the bulb and the reflector for cutting off such glare causing ones of the light rays that have traversed the indefinitely tapering part of the bulb. Another embodiment is disclosed in which the lamp body has its inside surface rendered reflective, thereby dispensing with a separate reflector. The light shade is formed directly on the reflective surface of the lamp body.
