One example method comprises, under selected braking conditions, shutting-off the engine and spinning-down the engine to rest while the vehicle is traveling, and in response to a foot-off-brake event, restarting the engine by at least partially engaging the transmission to assist in spinning-up of the engine from rest while the vehicle is traveling. In this manner, vehicle inertia can be used to assist in spinning-up the engine from rest when the vehicle is moving.

A motor is mechanically coupled to the engine, the engine having at least one moveable element mounted in a chamber, the moveable element being operable to cause a changing compression condition within the chamber and being mechanically coupled to a shaft for generating mechanical power. The method involves causing the motor to supply a positioning torque to the engine to move the at least one moveable element into a starting position, The method also involves causing the motor to supply a starting torque to the engine when the at least one moveable element is in the starting position to cause the moveable element to accelerate from the starting position under low compression conditions to generate sufficient momentum to overcome a peak compression condition in the chamber, thereby reducing the starting torque required to start the engine.

A start parameter setting used to control the start of the internal combustion engine is adjusted based upon both the sensed temperature of the engine coolant and the numerical difference between the sensed temperature of the engine coolant and the sensed temperature of the secondary engine component.

The aim of the invention is to allow an efficient and reliable driving operation, especially during starting of an internal combustion engine (3) from an electromotive travel, and to meet the requirements of travel comfort and driving dynamics of a person driving such a vehicle as far as possible. The method according to the invention is characterized by variably selecting, once a start demand for starting the internal combustion (3) is given, a starting mode from a group of available starting modes, using an evaluation of defined selection criteria depending on the current operating situation, and by initiating the respective starting mode. The device for carrying out said method comprises operating state detection and storage means (25) that communicate with a operating strategy unit (22) which is used to evaluate a current operating situation when the starting demand for starting the internal combustion engine (3) from an electromotive driving operation is received, and to select a start mode for starting the internal combustion engine from a group of stored starting modes and to initiate it.

摘要： An engine start-up control device for a vehicle is provided with a structure which prevents the occurrence of an uncomfortable shock arising from amplified engine load torque fluctuation caused by resonance, when an output of a first motor generator starting up an engine by driving the same is limited. With a second motor generator having reactive torque restricting the rotation of a transfer member, the first motor generator rotatably drives a sun gear to crank the engine for start-up thereof. When this takes place, if the output of the first motor generator is limited, torque reference reactive-force control is executed to control reactive torque of the second motor generator in accordance with a predetermined torque whereby when the engine load torque exceeds a predetermined value, a rotation speed variation of the transfer member is permitted against reactive torque such that the rotation speed variation of the transfer member allows engine load torque to escape for thereby precluding engine load torque fluctuation to be amplified due to resonance.
