    • A brake system for garage doors including a piston assembly movable within a longitudinal housing assembly and including a central through opening and a threaded bushing rigidly mounted to the piston assembly. A threaded axle is cooperatively received by the threaded bushing so that the rotation of the axle causes the piston assembly to move at a predetermined speed longitudinally within the housing assembly. Longitudinal connecting apertures permit the flow of fluid adjacent to the ends of the piston assembly to flow through. A flapper valve assembly is mounted to one of the ends of the piston assembly by a separating spring member. When the movement of the piston assembly exceeds a predetermined magnitude, the spring member is compressed eliminating the clearance and closing the connecting apertures. This prevents any additional flow and rotational movement of the threaded axle, which in turn is mechanically connected to the counterbalance axle of an opening and closing mechanism for garage doors.

    • The present invention relates to inertial braking system for spring-loaded devices, such as block and tackle window balances incorporated in single and double hung window assemblies. In one embodiment, a block and tackle window balance includes a translatable block assembly disposed in a track including a pawl pivotally attached to the translatable block assembly. The pawl, in response to a rapid acceleration of the translatable block assembly, rotates about a pivot and frictionally engages the track, thereby wedging the translatable block assembly in the track. In another embodiment, the translatable block assembly includes a cam attached to the pawl and a brake shoe disposed between the cam and a cord seated within a pulley. Rotation of the pawl causes the cam to translate the brake shoe, thereby compressing the cord against the pulley.

    • A pair of pawl assemblies is mounted on a shaft. Each pawl assembly includes a pawl, an arm and a hub. The arm is attached to the hub by a pivot, and a spring biases the arm toward the hub. The pawl attaches to the end of the arm, and the surface of the pawl has several teeth pointed in the direction of rotation. A brake drum made of two halves is bolted together around the shaft and pawl assemblies. The inner surface of the drum has teeth designed to mesh with the teeth on the pawls. A brake lining band fits around the brake drum in a groove formed along the circumference of the brake drum. The brake lining band attaches to adjustable mounting hardware, which is secured to a fixed surface. When the rotational speed of the shaft exceeds a safe level, the teeth on the pawls engage the teeth in the brake drum, causing the drum to turn against the brake lining band. The friction of turning the drum slows the shaft to a full stop. The teeth in the pawls and brake drum are designed to keep the pawls and the drum engaged even after the shaft stops rotating. A small reverse rotation of the shaft disengages the pawls from the brake drum.

    • An improved brake drive apparatus having a brake surface formed in a portion thereof and a brake assembly interposed generally between and connected to an input drive assembly and to an output member, the output member being rotatingly driven via the input drive assembly in the driving mode of the brake assembly and the brake assembly being positioned in the braking mode for preventing rotation of the output member in response to a torque applied at the output member. The brake assembly includes: a brake ring connected to and rotatingly driven via the input drive assembly; a first and a second brake shoe element, each having a portion engageable via a portion of the brake ring; a driven cam connected to the output member and disposed generally between the first and second brake shoe elements; and at least one brake roller disposed generally between the brake shoe elements and the driven cam. When the brake ring is rotatingly driven via the input drive assembly, the brake shoe elements are rotatingly driven via the brake ring and the driven cam is rotatingly driven following the rotation of the brake shoe elements as a result of the engagement between the driven cam and the brake shoe elements provided by the brake rollers, the output member being rotatingly driven via the driven cam as a result of the connection therebetween. When a torque is applied at the output member, the driven cam applies a force on the brake shoe elements via the brake rollers causing the brake shoe elements to be moved into braking engagement with the brake surface in the housing preventing the rotation of the output member even in those instances where the input drive assembly continues to be rotatingly driven.
